Chapter 70: Rainfall

When I glance out the window, it’s pouring. I wonder if the Demon King is singing lullabies this time. No, no, no, it’s not nice to have a stranger claim to be your wife when you’re in a state of ennui. However, the Demon King did not make eye contact with me today; I wish I could see him.

I snuck out of the room while thinking about it.

If you listen carefully, you can hear a familiar voice singing.

It’s the Demon King!

I can’t help but run to The Demon King.

“Mica?”

The Demon King recognizes my footsteps and turns around.

“Yes, uh… I’m here to see O’Dowell-sama.”

“I-I see.”

Embarrassed, the Demon King’s ears become red. His blushing ears make me blush as well. Did I come across as too direct? No… but I really mean it…

“Have you and I ever spent a rainy night together?”

“…Yes.”

Several times. I even begged you to sing me a lullaby since the “memory rain” was keeping me awake.

“The rain used to remind me of the day my father and mother died, but today I’m oddly peaceful.”

That makes me really happy. I’m overjoyed that I can assist the Demon King.

“…Song. Will you sing a song for me? I want to hear your song,” the Demon King said quietly.

“If that’s what you want, I’d be happy to.”

I considered a lullaby, but instead picked a song from a band my mother loved that I had performed before the Demon King.

I’m not a great singer, but I sing carefully in the hopes of refreshing the Demon King’s heart.

When I finished singing, the Demon King applauded.

“Your voice is soothing.”

This was something the Demon King had previously told me. It made me happy, and I nearly sobbed.

The Demon King noticed this, bent down, and gently rubbed my eyes.

“I’m not crying.”

“I see. Then it’s good… I’d rather see you with a smile on your──.”

“O’Dowell-sama?”

I ask The Demon King, who abruptly breaks off, and he shakes his head.

“I see. You used to sing for me. It’s the “memory rain” today, so the memories are flowing in.”

Memory rain from the future? But now that my presence has affected the future… I’m getting a little confused.

The Demon King noticed my expression and laughed.

“A memory rain might sometimes cause us to glimpse memories of what could have been.”

I understand. So what the Demon King saw was a hypothetical recollection, or, in my opinion, a memory that was present.

“I’m sorry.”

I’m taken aback by the Demon King’s abrupt apologies, despite the fact that the Demon King has no need to apologize to me.

“It was I who wanted you for my wife, but I don’t remember you—I’m sure it caused you pain.”

I’d be lying if I claimed I wasn’t sad that the Demon King had no recollection of me. But it’s no surprise that the Demon King lacks human royal blood.

“I hope to make new memories with O’Dowell-sama once again.”

My recollections of The Demon King aren’t completely gone. You may see them now and then in the memory rain, and if The Demon King doesn’t remember them, I do.

I feel more sorry for The Demon King, who discovered he had a wife he didn’t even know he had.

The Demon King chuckled.

“I think I understand why I chose you.”

He says this while tenderly touching my cheek. The Demon King’s somewhat cool body heat is soothing, but it also reminds me of our first night together…

“Do you have a fever, Mica?”

He tilted his head curiously as I turned red.

“I-It is nothing! It’s absolutely nothing!”

Please, worldly desires, go away!

“Is that so?”

“Yes, yes.”

I vigorously nodded. The Demon King took his hand away from my cheek, looking curious again.

I followed his hand with my eyes, regretful, and the Demon King chuckled again.

“It’s getting late—I’ll take you to your room.”

“It’s not that far… O-Okay…”

I couldn’t help but nod when I saw the Demon King’s cool smile.

After that, The Demon King led me back to my room, where I slept so soundly that I didn’t even dream.
