“Understood, understood,” the four of them replied in unison.

“You may go, if you’ve understood. You may organize things among yourselves. I care only about the outcomes.” Wunian spoke slowly and calmly as if she was a pushover.

The sky was still dark by the time the four of them walked out of the house.

Young Madam Wang said in a low voice, “I’ve never done any housework. I will have to rely on Aunty, Grandma and Mother for the performance of these tasks.”

Madam Wang protested, “How can an old woman like me do anything? I have to rely on all of you!”

Seeing this scene, Madam Ma knew that everyone was trying to pass the buck! “If you all don’t want to do it, I won’t either. We can all suffer together.”

Madam Liu chipped in, “Then let’s all not do any of the chores!”

Not long after, the northeastern skies were turning bright. It was almost dawn, and the four of them had not dared to go to sleep, but neither were any of them willing to do the chores.
