“I won’t be going back to the factory.”

Jiang Changhai pointed at the street ahead, “Master Yang, just stop at that intersection up ahead, that’ll be fine.”

The cargo truck slowly came to a stop at the intersection. With a package on his back, Jiang Changhai carefully disembarked the vehicle and waved toward the driver’s cab, “Master Yang, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Master Yang nodded back at him and drove toward the transportation plant, as he still had a truckload of goods to deliver.

Once the cargo truck had gone, Jiang Changhai, carrying his goods, headed straight for the Supply and Marketing Cooperative.

Carrying so many items on his back, he couldn’t go straight to the transportation plant or the worker’s dormitory.

Although the factory leaders were well aware of their smuggling, they couldn’t be too brazen and had to show some respect for factory regulations.

He planned to sell the items outside first before returning.

The salesperson at the Supply and Marketing Cooperative, seeing their major customer arrive, asked with a smile, “Comrade Jiang, what are you here to buy this time?”

“Sister, I’m not here to buy but to sell. I’ve got some good stuff from Haicheng,” Jiang Changhai whispered.

“Selling? Comrade Jiang, this is the Supply and Marketing Cooperative; we aren’t short of anything,” the salesperson said very tactfully.

“Heh, sister, don’t speak too soon. Take a look at what I’ve brought before you decide if you want it or not.”

Jiang Changhai took a small bundle out of his pocket and extracted a pair of pearl earrings, waving them in front of the salesperson.

The salesperson’s eyes lit up at the sight–pearl earrings? These were indeed good items that the Supply and Marketing Cooperative didn’t have.

Glancing around and seeing that no one had noticed them, she lowered her voice and asked, “Comrade Jiang, what do you mean by this?”

“Heh, these pearl earrings, I’ve just bought them in Haicheng. I’ll sell them to you at a low price, and you can resell them to others. We can both make a profit. I thought of you first when I came across this opportunity. You can’t say your buddy Jiang didn’t include you in making money,” Jiang Changhai said, insinuating she was in for a great deal.

The salesperson glanced at the pearl earrings in Jiang Changhai’s hand, tempted.

Having worked at the Supply and Marketing Cooperative for years, she knew some of the bolder colleagues would act as middlemen, consigning goods for a cut of the profit.

Particularly since policy had loosened up over the past year and the higher-ups mostly turned a blind eye, not bothering with such matters.

Seeing her interest, Jiang Changhai added, “Sister, how about this; I’ll give you the earrings at a good price and throw in an extra pair for you to wear or to give as a gift–they’re very flattering. These earrings are best suited for pretty young ladies like you, they enhance one’s complexion.”

The salesperson was both surprised and touched. At the county department store, the cheapest pair of earrings cost twenty yuan.

Even if she didn’t wear them, simply reselling them meant that the extra twenty yuan would go straight into her own pocket.
