Chapter 27: Bringing Meat to the Village Chief, Getting the Household Registration Done

He left one junglefowl and one wild rabbit to the Gu Family.

Even then, Du Aiqing had a smile on his face as he left the family, carrying a few hundred pounds of wild boar meat as if he had gotten the long end of the stick.

After their meal, Gu Jin brought the child out of the kitchen. She did not bat an eyelid when she saw the bloody scene in the courtyard.

She moved next to her grandfather, who was sitting in a recliner at the doorway. “I was thinking about bringing some meat to the village chief and getting the things concerning An done, Grandpa.”

The old man took a drag from the pipe and glanced at An Mingji beside Gu Jin.

He had always felt that the boy’s eyes were vicious like that of a wild child, not someone innocent.

In the past, he had viewed him as a smart and adorable child with a quality that no other children in the village possessed. Unfortunately, things had changed.

It was not that he could not stop his granddaughter from adopting the child, but Gu Jin was just adamant.

“Sure. Ask your uncle to cut off a bigger chunk of meat. I’ll go with you.”

“Thank you, Grandpa.”

Gu Jin did not expect her grandfather to go with her, and her smile grew wider.

The old man got to his feet and hollered at his eldest son, who was cutting the wild boar with a cleaver. “Chop a chunk of fatty meat. I’m going to visit the village chief with Gu Jin.”

Gu Dechang heard the old man. Saying nothing, he picked out the wild boar’s belly and cut off a sizeable chunk of it. The belly was the part with the fattiest meat.

Chen Hong looked at the wild boar fatty meat, which weighed around seven to eight pounds, and was a bit reluctant to give it away. Yet, she dared not stop him.

The sight of the seven- to eight-hundred-pound wild boar meat in the courtyard was a comfort to her, though.

Despite that, her perception of the wild child did not change.

When the thought of having to raise an outsider until he achieved adulthood came to mind, she felt bothered. She could not have loathed it more.

However, knowing that Gu Jin was going to get a separate household registration, she felt better. At least, they would have separate rations, and no one would be worried about getting the short end of the stick again.

Gu Jin had no idea what was on her aunt’s mind. Right then, she and An Mingji were following her grandfather to the village chief’s house.

Mr. He was a man in his fifties and the chief of Blackmount Village. His son was the chief of the production brigade in the village, with a few team leaders under his command.

Both father and son were capable men, especially Mr. He who had some ties with the head of the town.

Mr. He, the village chief, was smoking a pipe in the garden. It was a typical hobby for the elders there.

Seeing Grandpa Gu approach with a sizeable chunk of boar meat in his hand, Mr. He immediately got to his feet with a smile on his face.

“I heard rumors that the Gu Family got their hands on a huge wild boar. I didn’t know that it was real.”

Grandpa Gu handed the boar meat to Mr. He and guffawed. “It was Du Aiqing and my granddaughter who stumbled upon it together. She got lucky. Otherwise, the wild boar would have hurt her.”

Mr. He took the wild boar meat from him. Weighing around seven to eight pounds in his hands, the meat made him grin from ear to ear.

“Thank you so much. The children will be happy.”

Grandpa Gu took the opportunity to state his purpose for coming. “My granddaughter needs a favor from you: she wants to adopt this child.”

Grandpa Gu pointed at the wild child beside Gu Jin.

The village chief was wide-eyed upon hearing that.

“Are you kidding me?”

Mr. He scratched his head, which had turned gray, in disbelief.

Grandpa Gu sighed and shook his head. “I couldn’t dissuade this girl. She’s adamant about adopting this child.”
