Chapter 814: Chapter 639: The Task from Many Years Ago
Passing through the Shadow Gate, Shadow’s Power wrapped around his body. This was Roger’s first time entering the Land of Eternal Darkness through the Shadow Gate.
Everything around him remained chaotic, seemingly no different from before, yet Roger felt a touch of unease–everything was excessively quiet.
“With the strength you both possess, you should be able to protect yourselves if you exercise caution here.”
Roger nodded toward Higurashi Chika and Senka. He didn’t intend to interfere in their training too much; overbearing involvement from start to end would only nurture highly-skilled yet useless individuals.
That was not the type of successor he sought.
As a Demon Hunter, the moment you joined the Green Grass Trial, you had to be prepared for battle–and to die in battle.
This wasn’t cruelty.
“Let’s begin!”
Higurashi Chika and Senka exchanged glances. Yuan Guanghai took the lead; the Bear Fraction excelled at defense, while the Cat Fraction specialized in attack, complementing one another perfectly.
Although he would not actively follow them, Roger didn’t leave them completely unprotected. He placed a unique energy mark on each of their bodies and then bid them goodbye, heading directly towards the peak where Higurashi Gushan was located.
Higurashi Chika looked toward Roger’s departing figure, hesitant to speak, while Yuan Guanghai said nothing and simply urged Chika to leave with him.
Along the way, Roger was no longer as cautious as he had been during his first arrival in the Land of Eternal Darkness. His form swept through the air at maximum speed, and soon he reached the vicinity of the red mountain peak.
As he had anticipated, the summit was riddled with pits and craters, clearly the aftermath of Higurashi Gushan’s controlled rampage.
When departing, Higurashi Gushan hadn’t attempted to conceal his movements. Even though some time had passed, traces of his presence could still be seen.
Roger set off, following the trail.
Meanwhile, Yuan Guanghai and Higurashi Chika, pressing forward, began to notice peculiarities in their surroundings.
“It’s far too quiet.”
Higurashi Chika’s face was filled with puzzlement. The eerie silence made her grip her weapon tighter.
After her comment, she slowly tore through the Shadow’s Power surrounding her, releasing her life force.
Inhale. Exhale.
Higurashi Chika stood still, yet as time passed, nothing unusual occurred–no monster seemed to sense the life force she had released.
“Something is very wrong.”
Their figures moved swiftly, but the entire area seemed devoid of monsters, as if they had vanished into thin air. Only after advancing a considerable distance and nearing another region did things take a drastic turn.
A frail, mantis-like old man suddenly sensed Higurashi Chika’s life force and charged at her without hesitation.
The flash of a blade. Before the old man could get close, Higurashi Chika calmly returned her sword to its sheath.
In the instant her sword had struck, explosive power shredded the old man’s body into pieces.
At the same time, several eerie figures emerged from afar.
Yuan Guanghai turned back to look; the place they were standing seemed like a dividing line. Monsters ran rampant ahead, but behind them, everything was eerily silent.
“Should we inform Roger?”
Yuan Guanghai asked. Higurashi Chika hesitated for a moment, then nodded. She pointed toward a distant direction based on the connection between them.
Yuan Guanghai’s brow twitched slightly. He understood Higurashi Chika’s intention–the girl intended to charge straight through!
Cats are supposed to be gentle, aren’t they?
Could it be that the Cat Fraction folks were all lunatics? A bizarre thought surfaced in his mind. Comparing himself to a member of the Cat Fraction like Higurashi Chika, the so-called Bears suddenly seemed much tamer.
This damned world.
Elsewhere, Roger was still on the move. After covering some distance, the traces left by Higurashi Gushan grew faint and nearly undetectable.
After all, time had passed, and other monsters’ activities had disrupted the remaining signs.
Roger felt a small pang of regret and paused his advance.
Just then, he suddenly sensed a familiar fluctuation of energy from a certain direction in the sky.
“It’s the Way of the Asura from Higurashi Gushan!”
His expression shifted slightly. Thinking back to the changes in the Different Space, Roger speculated that the Nekomata had reopened a pathway and locked onto Higurashi Gushan’s location once more.
Back when he had exited the Different Space, Roger could have easily assimilated one of the nearby houses, allowing him to enter that space whenever needed.
And he had indeed done so; however, the space itself was peculiar. Even though he assimilated one of its structures, it had recently ceased functioning.
Based on Roger’s conjecture, the Different Space must have undergone new changes. Although he hadn’t plans to rush back into the area prematurely, he had been cautious, knowing the Nekomata would seal off the entire realm if necessary.
Even with the Nekomata’s formidable power, Roger wasn’t overly concerned.
The only thing he cared about was the Giant Dragon circling the sky.
Should that creature awaken, everything would spiral out of control.
After realizing the changes in the Different Space, Roger had decided to seek out Higurashi Gushan in the Land of Eternal Darkness, and things had unfolded just as he predicted.
The Different Space had again undergone periodic transformations; the pathway reopened, and the Nekomata tracked down Higurashi Gushan.
Meanwhile, in a frost-laden frozen land, a defiant figure was locked in a fierce struggle with a power from another dimension.
This time, the penetrated spatial passage was far more stable, allowing the Nekomata to channel even greater energy.
