Chapter 20: Interception Failed

“Is it gone?” The president of the United States asked the same question just as Chen Xin said it.

However, he was asking about the meteorite heading towards North America, the one that the Russians were originally going to destroy.

They launched another bomb to stop the meteorite. Five powerful war bombs were used in total.

The explosion wiped out their radar and equipment completely. They had to wait for the results.

“I’m sorry Mr. President, we can’t tell what’s going on right now, all our equipment is down,” reported one of the soldiers. He had never seen an explosion from five war bombs before too.

He immediately ordered the other soldiers to fix their equipment.

Soon, one of them rerouted the surveillance equipment and managed to get a visual in the government bunker. A huge fireball was seen burning up in the sky.

Everyone was electrified by the scene, it was burning because the bombs hit the target.

Someone asked confusedly, “Wait, that’s the effect of five war bombs?”

A war bomb might not be as powerful as a nuclear bomb but it was still powerful. There was something wrong with the way it looked, something was off about the size of the meteorite.

Just when everyone was confused, there was a fiery meteorite shower striking the ground out of nowhere.

“What is that?!” Everyone was on edge, they hurried up to try and figure out what was going on.

More burning meteorites struck the ground, it was a raining disaster in North America.

“Holy f*ck! Can somebody tell me what’s going on?!” The USA president dropped a few f-bombs.

However, it did not work. He was not the Hulk, he could not solve things just by being angry.

He cursed angrily and threw all his manners into the ditch but still could not figure out what was going on.

He was about to smash something when someone finally pointed it out.

“Mr. President, I figured it out! The bombs didn’t explode at the same time. There are only two bombs that successfully exploded on the meteorite, the other bombs went off before they could hit the meteorite,” he hastily explained.

A situation like this was expected, they launched so many bombs to ensure they hit their target at least once. They did not expect that all the bombs would explode at the same time.

It was still an acceptable situation.

“Then what about the meteorite shower? Is it debris from the meteorite?” asked an associate standing next to the president.

“Yes, it’s meteorite debris! The bomb exploded on the meteorite, but it did not blow it into bits! According to NASA, we have a lot of incoming debris heading our way, one of them has a diameter of one kilometer!”

“What?!” Everyone in the bunker panicked.

Meteorite debris was not a big deal, only the buildings would be hurt, it would only be troublesome to rebuild them afterward.

However, a meteorite with a one-kilometer diameter was destructive enough to eliminate the United States!

Scientists once discovered a meteorite crater in Greenland with a diameter of thirty-three kilometers. It was hit by a meteorite exactly like that! According to scientists, everything in a seven-kilometer radius of the surface was cratered!

The crash was not the worst part. The worst part was the series of disasters that would ensue.

“Mr. President, what should we do? Please give us orders,” a soldier looked at the president. It was time for the chosen president to make a decision.

Everyone looked at the president and awaited his orders.

He took a step back and almost fell.

He held on to a table to steady himself. He looked at everyone in the bunker and asked, “Can we stop the meteorite with bombs?”

“Sorry Mr. President, it’s too late,” answered one of the soldiers.

The president blacked out at that, he put his hand on his forehead and took a deep breath, “Use all channels to release this news to the world! Let every citizen take shelter, calculate the meteorite landing location from NASA at the same time, do everything we possibly can to evacuate…”

He had trouble breathing, he stopped for a while then continued, “I announce that the United States of America is hereby in a state of emergency. Go to Defcon 1. We are on a war footing, the whole nation should be on guard. Every government, every military soldier, and every policeman should do their job and keep an orderly society… until we get through this.”

Everyone listened in silence, it was depressingly awful. A female staff bit her lip and held on to her shirt collar nervously.

Finally, the USA president gave his last order. He looked at the silent bunch and sighed, “I shouldn’t say this as the President of the United States at a time like this but, may God bless America.”

He grabbed a nearby chair and sat down. The others asked his associate, “What about the Russians’ mission? They sacrificed the United States, did they manage to save the rest of Earth?”
