Da Hui was indeed very strong. After a struggle, he nearly broke free.

Kang Mingzhu, in her urgency, threw her breakfast onto the table and rushed out to help.

“Senior Kang!” Xie Wanying was startled and followed her out.

Wengui searched around for the security booth and found a rope to grab.

“How could he beat you like this.” Having captured the criminal, Kang Mingzhu ran back and carefully examined Xie Wanying’s face, unable to bear the sight and said with distress.

“It’s nothing, Senior Sister.” Xie Wanying intended to touch the corner of her mouth to assess the extent of her face injuries.

“Don’t touch it. I’m going to find some disinfectant for you. You sit here,” Kang Mingzhu stopped her from touching the wound and quickly went to find medication in the emergency room.

Held back by her senior sister and told not to move, Xie Wanying sat down in a chair inside the security booth.

Outside, the security guard and Wengui watched over Da Hui.

The police station in the area was very close to the hospital. Upon receiving the call, it took only a few minutes for the police to arrive. The people at the scene reported the situation to the police.

“Assaulting a doctor?”

“Yes.”

The police asked Da Hui, “What’s the matter with you? Why did you assault the doctor?”

Da Hui spoke roughly, “My son has been harmed by her.”

“Where is your son?” If this man said the doctor had harmed his son, the police officer needed to check on the victim, so they asked.

“In the emergency room.”

The incensed Kang Mingzhu, returning with the medication, overheard this and said, “As doctors, we would never do such a thing that goes against conscience and morality. Comrade, if we wanted to kill someone, why on earth would we become doctors? You need to take him back and interrogate him thoroughly.”

“Does anyone else know what happened?” the police asked the surrounding crowd.

“I know, uncle,” Wengui raised his hand and said, “They hijacked my sister’s ambulance last night, wanting her dead. His son just had some minor scrapes. I’m sure it was Dahui’s Wife who instigated him to assault someone. She dropped their son and, afraid he’d be angry, kept urging him to hit others – wanting him to hit me, wanting to hit my grandma, and now she pushed him to assault the doctor.”

The truth was, Dahui’s Wife who fanned the flames deserved the beating the most, Wengui knew, so the fists he clenched had not relaxed.

Everyone understood the situation.

The police asked the suspect, “Where is your wife?”

After hearing Wengui’s words, Da Hui was dumbfounded: What was the situation? Who had hurt his precious son?

It seemed this man had been completely fooled by his wife. The police thought for a moment, deciding to gather the entire family for questioning at the station.

“Comrade, you can’t just let this kind of offender go free,” Kang Mingzhu stressed repeatedly to the police.

“I know, I know,” the police officer indicated understanding and reassured them solemnly.

Entering the security booth with the medications, Kang Mingzhu said to Xie Wanying, “Come on, let me apply some for you.”

Her face was a bit swollen; ice would be best. Hearing that ice was needed, Wengui ran off to find ice cubes. A security guard helped by bringing a towel. Seeing Xie Wanying’s swollen face, he too sighed and said, “I’ve been here for five years and have seen a lot. It’s rare to see someone like you not crying.”

Incidences of disputes and assaults were quite common at the hospital; otherwise, there wouldn’t be security on duty 24 hours a day. The emergency room was the most prone to disputes. Throughout the year, there would be trouble every few days. Sometimes it was quarrels among patient’s relatives and friends, sometimes it was patients causing a scene while intoxicated, and at times it was unclear if someone was mentally ill, coming to the emergency and attacking anyone they saw. There were also those who targeted hospital staff in groups.
