Chapter 1086: Chapter 1086 Character Witness_1
Despite Alexander Summers’s disapproval, Purple Summers still insisted on defending Norton Young.
After all, Norton was the first to call her after he got into trouble, clearly placing all his hopes on Purple. If she abandoned him, it would have been too cruel.
Purple wanted to find a character witness for Norton, which would make her words in court more convincing.
When she went to school on Monday, she asked a few classmates about it, only to be greatly disappointed that not a single one was willing to testify for Norton.
The reason was that they were not familiar with him.
This surprised Purple, as she had thought that Norton was quite popular in class.
He was always helping someone buy water or print notes; sometimes the girls would even jokingly tease him. Compared to the aloof Purple, Norton was well-liked in the class.
Purple couldn’t help but stop a female classmate and ask, “Ellis, didn’t you say last time that Norton is very naive and honest? You even said he was cute and suited to play Santa Claus.”
“But you can know a person’s face, not his heart,” the classmate replied. “And no matter how honest he is, he’s still a man, a man almost in his thirties with no girlfriend around. Who knows if he might develop some psychological issues.”
Those were really unpleasant words to hear.
Not only were they unpleasant, but they also conveyed a sense of disdain from a high ground.
Purple’s expression turned very ugly.
Seeing her displeasure, the female student hastily added, “I’m not making this up, if you don’t believe me, go ask Marcus. The guys have a group chat, and Norton often shares those kinds of videos in it!”
Purple suddenly felt powerless and lost the interest to continue the conversation.
She believed that Norton was not the only one who shared content in the group chat.
Since Norton typically followed the crowd, doing anything to fit in, sharing content must mean that others shared as well, or it was requested by someone else.
It’s nothing to fuss over; most men keep such things in private, and it’s unrelated to morals or behavior.
But strangely, if a man is handsome, women usually see it as normal; if the man is ugly or overweight, women tend to perceive him as creepy or even deviant.
Knowing that her classmates were prejudiced against Norton, Purple had no more expectations and went to the school library after class to look up cases related to sexual assault to find a breakthrough.
While researching, she ran into Victoria Morrison.
Purple was momentarily startled.
Logically speaking, since the other person was her teacher, she should greet her politely, but considering Victoria Morrison’s dislike for her, Purple was uncertain whether to approach her or not.
Unexpectedly, upon seeing her, Mrs. Morrison was the one to greet her first, “Are you here to look up materials?”
Purple nodded, “Yes, I’m here to look up cases.”
Victoria Morrison asked her, “I heard you’re looking for a character witness for Norton?”
Since Norton’s case was quite serious and officers had come to the school for enquiries, it was not surprising for Mrs. Morrison to be aware of it.
Purple didn’t hide anything and honestly said, “Norton is introverted and doesn’t have many friends. His classmates aren’t very familiar with him, and no one is willing to testify for him.”
Upon hearing this, Victoria Morrison said calmly, “I can testify for him in court.”
Purple was taken aback, her eyes widening slightly, “Mrs. Morrison… do you believe in Norton?”
A character witness is someone who can vouch for the defendant’s behavior and character based on past conduct.
In the sentencing phase, such testimony is generally excluded to prevent misleading the jury, but it can be used to refute any statements made by the other party questioning the defendant’s character.
Therefore, a character witness must be very familiar with the defendant and understand them well to be qualified to vouch for their character.
In Purple’s memory, Victoria Morrison had always been harsh on Norton. How could she want to testify for him?
Victoria Morrison said coldly, “I have taught him, I’m familiar with his character. Although his grades aren’t great, he’s actually quite smart, cautious, and knows how to seek good and avoid harm. He would never commit a crime in a moment of folly against the Criminal Law.”
As her voice trailed off, Mrs. Morrison smiled faintly and continued, “Even if he were to commit a crime, he would plan it carefully.”
