Chapter 1096: Chapter 1096: Win-Win_1
Victoria Morrison said she herself might have been mistaken.
Perhaps Bridget Stone was so focused simply because she was calm enough to seek out the irrational parts of Norton Young’s testimony.
Victoria Morrison had no evidence; it was just conjecture on her part.
Yet, Purple Summers found herself inclined to believe this conjecture. She had been feeling that something was off ever since earlier and couldn’t put her finger on it–an odd, dissonant feeling.
Why did Bridget Stone opt for a public hearing?
Why would Norton Young give a long-winded speech in the witness stand?
Was it a genuine outpouring of emotion, or a pre-memorized draft?
Victoria Morrison patted her shoulder, “Stop thinking about it. Right now, you’re just a lawyer, and winning this case is enough.”
Purple Summers felt that Victoria Morrison was both right and wrong, wanting to delve deep into thought, but her mind was in disarray.
At that moment, someone came over to inform her that the jury had reached a verdict.
They were quick this time.
Strangely, Purple Summers suddenly didn’t want to know the outcome.
Walking into the courtroom, the jury handed the verdict to the judge, who announced that the charges against Norton Young were not proven, and he was released on the spot.
She had won again.
Norton Young, excited, grasped her hand and thanked her repeatedly. As always, his face reddened and he broke into a sweat, while also showing the ecstatic relief of having his name cleared.
Purple Summers couldn’t quite grasp her feelings.
She should be happy for Norton Young, but every time she thought of the simple, almost foolishly naive smiling face before her, if it were a mask and a performance, Purple Summers felt extremely uncomfortable, very uneasy!
He once asked if she believed him, and she chose to believe, but in the end… he had deceived her!
Purple Summers did not feel hatred or anger, just an icy chill in her heart.
They exited the courtroom and the reporters swarmed around them. The bodyguard shielded Purple Summers from the crowd as she walked silently outside, her expression cold and devoid of words.
Despite winning the case, she felt no joy whatsoever.
She noticed the reporters were also surrounding Norton Young and Bridget Stone, and without any desire to see the expressions on their faces, she commanded the bodyguard nearby, “Call him over after it’s over.”
The bodyguard acknowledged.
Purple Summers went to the parking lot, got into her car, and sat there, deep in thought, alone.
After a while, someone knocked on the window. Purple Summers looked up to see Norton Young’s obliging smiling face outside the window.
Norton Young opened the car door and sat down, asking Purple Summers, “What’s the matter?”
Purple Summers thought for a moment and then said to the driver and bodyguard in front, “You guys go ahead.”
Baffled, Norton Young watched the driver and bodyguard leave the car, then curiously asked again, “Is there something important you want to tell me?”
Purple Summers was unsure how to start and after a long silence, she asked him, “Do you know Bridget Stone?”
Norton Young froze, “No… no, I don’t…”
Despite his words, sweat began to bead on his forehead and his gaze inadvertently shifted away, betraying his discomfort.
Purple Summers’s fingers involuntarily clenched, and with resolve, she asked, “Norton Young, you’ve taken the judicial examination five times, so you should be very clear about what Article 307 of ‘Criminal Law’ is, right?”
Norton Young’s expression tensed, and he uttered a heavy “hmm.”
“Norton Young, tell me, what is Article 307 of ‘Criminal Law’?” Purple Summers asked.
Norton Young remained silent.
Purple Summers called his name sternly, “Norton Young.”
Norton Young’s lips moved slightly, he lowered his head, “The crime of false prosecution, bringing a lawsuit with fabricated facts, disrupting judicial order or seriously infringing upon the legal rights of others, results in imprisonment of up to three years, and a fine; in serious circumstances, imprisonment of three to seven years, plus a fine.”
Purple Summers took a deep breath and said, “Go turn yourself in.”
Norton Young suddenly looked up at her, disbelief in his eyes, “Why?! Isn’t everything fine now? You won the case, gained reputation, and I got what I wanted! It’s a win-win! Isn’t this good?!”
