Chapter 12: What Do You Want as Compensation?

Momentarily stunned, Yan Susu recovered and realized that he was asking about Ling Xiusi’s arm being dislocated. She shook her head, then nodded, then shook it again.

Although her heart had turned cold, and she deeply resented Ling Xiusi’s cruelty, it was still hard to turn away from a relationship that had lasted for so many years. What she had said at the scene was her only way of retaining some semblance of her dignity.

But what she did know was that she could never love Ling Xiusi again. Otherwise, she really would be the world’s biggest masochist!

“About last night…that was a misunderstanding.” Lu Zhanxiu tried awkwardly to explain. After all, this was his first time having to explain anything like this.

After his shower, he’d noticed that Yan Susu had disappeared, along with his clothes. Accustomed to always being in control, he was obviously annoyed.

He had picked up his cell phone, intending to order an investigation, when one of his friends suddenly appeared on screen with a piece of juicy gossip. Apparently, a dramatic scene of getting “caught in the act” had unfolded the night before at the Imperial Hotel; the adulterous couple was Mr. Li and the “delectable” that they had sent for Lu Zhanxiu. The ensuing scene was as bloody as it was spectacular.

It was then that he realized that Yan Susu’s appearance was an accident.

As for the incident at the hospital, Lu Xingguang and Secretary Han had already given their explanation.

Startled, Yan Susu slowly began to understand. Probably, when she had crashed into that beautiful woman in the hotel lobby yesterday, their access cards had been mixed up, and she had gone into Young Mr. Lu’s room by mistake.

“What do you want as compensation?” Instead of wasting his effort in explaining, Lu Zhanxiu decided that offering compensation was a more practical approach.

“There is no need. I was just unlucky last night. It’s not your fault.”

“Unlucky?”

Her words had instantly transformed Lu Zhanxiu’s originally good mood into fury and he laughed sarcastically. “Oh. That is really unfortunate.”

Yan Susu noticed the sudden change in Lu Zhanxiu’s expression but did not know what she had said to upset him.

In the end, she decided to continue, saying, “Also, you helped me out of a tight spot back there.”

“Spit it out.” Obviously, Lu Zhanxiu did not buy into what she had said.

After some hesitation, Yan Susu started warily, “Help me get a new job, a new apartment, preferably someplace where Ling Xiusi will never be able to find me.”

“Is that it?” At the police station, this same woman had demanded a huge compensation, but now only this?

Biting her lip, Yan Susu made another request. “Help me find my mother.”

“That’s it?”

“Yep. All that should give you enough trouble already.” Getting away from Ling Xiusi and finding her mother were, to her, happiness beyond imagining!

But to Lu Zhanxiu, these tasks were as nothing.

His finger gently tapped the steering wheel, and he kept his eyes lowered. He did not indicate if he was going to accept or decline her requests.

Yan Susu looked sideways at him, feeling worried that she might have gone overboard.

As the seconds turned into minutes, she could not stay silent any longer and began, “Um…”

Just then, however, Lu Zhanxiu’s attention turned to his phone.

3…

At that exact moment, the phone rang. Lu Zhanxiu’s lips curled slightly as he pressed the ACCEPT button to take the call.

Without waiting for him to speak, the pitter-patter began from the other end.

It was his mother.

“You unfilial son, when are you going to bring me back a daughter-in-law? If you cannot do so this year, I will ask your father to disown you, throw you out of the family home, and remove your name from the ancestral registry!”

“Whatever makes you happy,” Lu Zhanxiu replied flatly. He had long since gotten used to this often-used tactic of blackmail and threat.

“Sister-in-law, this is not working. Let me try.” Third Aunt grabbed the phone from her and spoke in a soothing voice.

“Oh, Xiuxiu, Third Aunt has once again found you a few candidates suitable to be your wife. They are all incredibly beautiful, well-educated, and excellently brought up. I’ve asked your cousin to send them to you, together with a health tonic. Let yourself go tonight, and put aside any inhibitions!”
