Chapter 10: Millie’s First Day at Kindergarten

In the morning, I woke up from the smell of muffins and Millie’s sweet morning kiss.

“Mommy, get up quickly. Grandma made your favorite muffin.”

I opened my eyes. The sun was just right outside. Millie smiled sweetly and I stretched. The past couldn’t be erased. Fortunately, everything was okay now. As long as everyone who loved me and everyone I loved was safe, I had nothing to complain about, right?

“Okay, sweetheart. It’s your first day in kindergarten. Are you looking forward to it?” I remembered that today was Millie’s first day. I wonder if she could adjust to her new environment.

“Of course. I can’t wait to see if my new school has slides and little trains.”

It seemed like she was really looking forward to going to a new school. I felt somewhat relieved.

“Mom, it smells so good. I missed this smell even in my dreams.” As soon as I got downstairs, I smelled the muffins. Mom was so good at making muffins! I thought that she had reached the level of opening a muffin shop!

“Look at you. You’re already a mother, but you’re still drooling.” Mom smiled and tapped my forehead.

“Mommy, are you really drooling? I want to see,” Millie asked curiously.

“Show me, show me!” Millie ran around me. I teased her.

“What are you looking at, my sweet little princess?” Suddenly, Mike’s voice sounded in the doorway. I was so shocked that I choked on the muffin I just popped in my mouth.

I started to cough violently. Mike dashed over and looked at me nervously. “Baby, are you okay? How come you’re choking?” he said as he slapped my back.

I coughed even more violently at that.

Mom handed me a glass of water, and I took a few sips before I recovered.

“Mike, what are you doing here?” I asked the” culprit” who had suddenly appeared.

He looked innocent. “Millie told me yesterday that it’s her first day of kindergarten today and that she wanted me to send her to the kindergarten. Didn’t she tell you?”

Millie lowered her head and whispered, “Mom, I forgot to tell you.” Yes, she had fallen asleep as soon as she got home yesterday.

“Please, Mommy, can you let Uncle Mike take me?” She looked at me pitifully.

My heart softened when I saw her expression. “Okay! Don’t do it again. Uncle Mike is very busy.”

Mike immediately said, “It’s okay, I’ve seen it. Her kindergarten is on our way to work. I can send her there in the future.”

I didn’t know what to say all of a sudden. “How can that work?”

When we got out of the car, Millie was carrying her little school bag. She held me with one hand and Mike with the other and walked very happily toward the kindergarten door.

“Baby, be good in kindergarten. Mommy will pick you up in the afternoon.” I was still a little worried. This was a new environment, after all. Millie was anxious when she first started kindergarten and cried for a whole week.

“I know, Mom.”

“Baby, if you encounter anything, remember to tell the teacher. Mom has already greeted the teacher. She’ll take care of you. You don’t have to be afraid.”

“Okay, Mom.”

“Baby, you have to take the initiative to befriend the other children. You’re so cute, so they’ll definitely like you.”
