Chapter 936: Chapter 932: Drawing the Bow Chapter 936: Chapter 932: Drawing the Bow Looking at the mountain, you could kill a horse with hope.
But after a fierce struggle, the forest at the foot of the mountain was already within reach.
Between the sparse trees, Bi Fang maneuvered the massive off-road vehicle like a fish darting to and fro, until the trees became too densely packed and could no longer accommodate the size of the car. Only then did he gradually step on the brakes.
Small stones flew out from under the crushing wheels, scraping against tree bark leaving shallow marks. The front bumper plowed through the bushes, sliding down the terrain and carving a clear dry path on the ground, finally coming to a stop beside a tree and on a bare patch of ground that had been cleared.
The faint smell of burnt rubber began to spread amongst the trees, mingling with the choking scent of dust and smoke.
Bi Fang, opening the car door, stepped out with a crunching sound as his shoes ground against the pebbles. He coughed twice and shut the car door.
Next, he opened the rear door and dragged the three people out.
Palmer howled in pain, begging repeatedly, only to be met with a brutal punch from Bi Fang, compelling him to finally close his mouth.
Strapping the Quiver around his waist, Bi Fang shouldered the Short Spear and left the animals to stealthily move back in the direction they had come from.
Under the hunting moon, the forest wasn’t too dark, and it had a faint white glow. The visibility wasn’t too bad, and for Bi Fang, it could be said to be rather good.
Regulating his breathing, his stamina quickly recovered from the recent expenditure.
The chase might have seemed low on action, but with high-strung nerves and the rush of adrenaline, the energy drained was tremendous.
Gradually getting into his element, Bi Fang’s footsteps became light and quick. Trying to avoid stepping on any pebbles, he moved almost without sound, like a phantom swiftly weaving through the trees.
As Bi Fang pressed on, the air began to carry a stronger scent of fuel and rubber.
Based on the wind direction, the smell should have been dissipating, but now it was growing more pronounced, which indicated that there was a second source of the odor nearby.
Bi Fang cautiously lowered his body and pressed himself against a tree, opting not to act rashly.
There was no need for night vision in the current forest lighting, but he was unclear if the other party had thermal imaging equipment.
There were at least four pairs of eyes on the other side, while he only had two, making his scope of observation undoubtedly less comprehensive.
A bright, moving heat source would be quite conspicuous under these circumstances.
But obstructions were a different story.
All thermal imaging products, unless there was some era-defining breakthrough, had very poor obstruction penetration. They could see through low brush and observe targets behind it, but absolute not through trees.
If the opposition still wanted money, they would inevitably follow the tracks he had left.
Therefore, lying in wait was the best option.
After making sure that there was no one nearby, Bi Fang quickly stowed his gear and climbed up into the tree, using hands and feet. He concealed himself behind the trunk, standing on a sturdy branch.
The other side had used a similar technique to build a platform in the treetops to ambush Cecil the Lion King.
Whether it was against humans or lions, this tactic for springing an ambush was quite effective.
Unfortunately, there was no time left to set up traps; otherwise, he would have surely shown them who’s the king of the jungle.
Bi Fang, hidden among the treetops, counted his breaths. When he reached the eighty-seventh count, there was a slight rustle in the woods.
Three off-road vehicles cut through the woods, scattering the small animals far and wide. At least for a short while, no bold creatures would risk returning.
The target appeared.
Bi Fang withdrew an arrow, notched it between his fingers, and slowly set the nock against the bowstring.
In an ambush, a bow and arrow are actually much more useful than firearms. They release without smoke, light, and produce minimal noise; even the armed police and special forces still preserve the use of powerful crossbows.
Of course, crossbows and bows are different beasts, but for Bi Fang, there was no difference between the two.
The most crucial point was that, in the trajectory of a shot, a bow could accomplish things completely impossible for firearms…
As the sounds grew closer, the audience couldn’t help but tense up.
It was like watching a horror movie where the increasingly tense background music foreshadowed something that everyone knew was coming, something that was about to happen, yet the fear would inevitably arrive.
Bi Fang adjusted his breathing, taking in deep breaths of oxygen to heighten the excitement of his muscles.
His senses were fully engaged in capturing the molecules brimming with information in the air–smells, sounds, the touch of the wind–everything was utilized for pinpointing his location.
Grace moved through the shadows of the woodland, concealing his form as much as possible, with Chaman closely following behind him, heads-up display equipped, staying alert.
Tonight’s moonlight was bright enough to cast shadows through the trees.
Before this, Grace never imagined that just to take down one man, they would need to deploy a whole team, which still wasn’t enough, leading to the current difficult situation, yet they had to continue.
Money!
Over thirty million, with at least five million for each individual!
Five million!
What could five million do?
It could buy a luxurious residence in the heart of New York, secure the best private schools for his children, allow oneself to enjoy a life of the highest quality–his entire life would take a huge leap forward.
Or he could use that money to start a company, becoming a true tycoon.
Alternatively, he could go to Texas, buy a vast farm, hire a bunch of rednecks to cultivate his land, and enjoy the life of hunting whenever he stepped outside.
What were teammates good for?
Nothing at all!
They were but a group of thugs who had come together for profit; not killing teammates simply ensured that one could safely get the money in the end.
Only money, money was the most important!
After taking several deep breaths, Grace calmed his surging desires and continued following the trails on the ground.
His driving skills were clearly not on par with Bi Fang’s ability to weave through the forest; after a strenuous attempt to follow, the off-road vehicle grazed a rock and crashed into a tree, forcing the whole team to get out and pursue on foot.
As for Lin Sai and Zhuomuke, their situation was even worse; with their hands and feet bound, they could only manage the vehicle by one pushing the steering wheel with his face while the other operated the brakes with his feet. After crashing into several trees, they finally came to a stop, severely injured and unable to move.
The woodland at the foot of the mountain was sparse, and a skilled driver could advance the car a bit further, but as they went higher, the terrain grew steeper and the trees denser. The Asian anchor definitely couldn’t have gotten far and eventually had to get out of the car too.
The group of four observed their surroundings with professional scrutiny, following the car tracks on the ground, utterly oblivious to the fact that Bi Fang had already doubled back and was waiting for them on the road.
As the four stepped through the shadows and entered his view, Bi Fang expanded his chest, his latissimus dorsi muscles swelling as he slowly drew the great bow.
Accompanying the release of his breath was a gleaming, icy arrow!
