Chapter 1064: Chapter 1046: She’s Going into Labor Chapter 1064: Chapter 1046: She’s Going into Labor She combed her long hair, waiting for it to dry.

She hadn’t noticed until now how much it had grown.

She’d have to get a haircut when she got home.

As a doctor, she couldn’t keep her hair this long; it really got in the way.

From the moment she chose this career, she knew she couldn’t have flowing locks.

Others might, but she couldn’t afford it.

If things got busy, she wouldn’t have time to manage a hairstyle, so shorter was better, not to mention good-looking.

Gu Ning had finished preparing the meal.

They had white rice porridge for breakfast, along with the steamed buns made by Tang Yuxin the day before, and Gu Ning’s stir-fried potato strips.

Given the current circumstances, their food supply was still quite decent.

Gu Ning’s stir-fried potato strips went well with the steamed buns, and they were filling too.

As they were eating, a frantic knocking suddenly came from outside.

Gu Ning and Tang Yuxin exchanged glances.

What could it be?

“I’ll go check, maybe someone from the neighboring families needs help.”
Gu Ning put down his bowl and walked to the door.

As he opened it, there stood a man almost drenched by the rain.

“Is there a doctor in the house?

My wife’s sick, please save her.

She’s pregnant, seven months along.”
“Wait here,” said Gu Ning as he headed back inside without further question.

This was a matter of life and death, and with a pregnant woman involved, it was no wonder he had braved the heavy rain to come so early.

Tang Yuxin was a doctor, perhaps the only one around.

With current conditions being what they were, their only option was mutual aid.

“Pregnant woman?” Tang Yuxin put down the half-eaten bun in her hand.

“Let’s go and see,” she said.

As for the specifics, they could only be assessed once she saw the patient herself.

Gu Ning grabbed raincoats and helped Tang Yuxin put one on.

The rain was still heavy, as seen by the man’s completely soaked clothes.

It wasn’t clear where he lived, but he was certainly drenched.

Tang Yuxin and Gu Ning followed the man surnamed Bai.

He said their house wasn’t too far, normally a ten-minute walk, but now it might take half an hour.

The path wasn’t over mountains, but the road was made difficult by vehicles and other obstacles blocking the way.

In the meantime, the man shared his story.

His name was Bai Qing, and his wife Liu Juan.

They came here for tourism.

He initially didn’t want to come because his wife was seven months pregnant and it was dangerous.

But she insisted on coming here to give birth.

Their hometown was cold and lacked heating.

She didn’t want to do the month of confinement there, choosing here instead, where the living conditions were better, she wouldn’t suffer during confinement, and the baby would thrive better than in their chilly home even with air conditioning, which could be harmful to the child.

Eventually, Bai Qing felt Liu Juan made sense, and they came here.

They rented a house, planning to stay long-term, so they didn’t think about eating out every day.

Outside food was alright to try for novelty but not for long-term sustenance.

Even with their means, it wasn’t feasible to keep eating out, and it wasn’t clean enough.

Bai Qing decided to cook at home.

Like the Tang Family, they had stocked up on rice, flour, and oil.

For water, they used bottled water to avoid soil-water issues, especially for Liu Juan.

She used only purified water even for washing her hair, fearing she might react badly to the local water.

Since arriving, they barely drank any tap water.

Because they had sufficient food and water, the earthquake didn’t greatly impact their lifestyle.

Most people used gas stoves, so there was no issue with power outages preventing cooking.

Food shortage was unlikely to be fatal.

But the situation arose so suddenly.

Liu Juan was fine a couple of days ago, but her mood began to deteriorate, and she had trouble sleeping at night.

By early this morning, before she even got up, she complained of abdominal pain.

Bai Qing was so frightened he didn’t know what to do.

After frantic knocking on several doors without help, an older woman directed him to Tang Yuxin.

She was a doctor, after all.

The neighbor promised to look after Liu Juan while Bai Qing sought help, allowing him to leave with some peace of mind.

As they arrived at the Bai residence, Liu Juan’s agonizing screams could be heard from inside.

Bai Qing’s face went pale; he almost couldn’t stand, nearly crawling and rolling as he rushed out.

Tang Yuxin entered the house, took off her raincoat, and immediately noticed the poor air quality inside.

The Bai Family apparently didn’t open their windows.

She quickly went to a window, opened a small section for ventilation, and found her way around easily as it resembled the place she and Gu Ning were staying.

A woman’s heart-wrenching cries came from inside.

“Doctor Tang, I beg you, please save my wife,” Bai Qing said, nearly ready to kneel to Tang Yuxin in desperation.

“Looks like she’s about to give birth,” an older woman said, noticing Liu Juan’s condition.

But how could she have a child here?

It was only seven months; though there’s a saying ‘seven live, eight don’t’, with the local conditions where even adults were barely surviving, a premature baby had an even lesser chance.

Tang Yuxin stepped forward and took Liu Juan’s wrist to feel her pulse.

Liu Juan was in so much pain, disheveled, eyes shut, and unresponsive to anyone.

Tang Yuxin pulled out a needle kit from her belongings and began treating Liu Juan.

This wasn’t a case of childbirth but a miscarriage.

Without a proper hospital or necessary medication, it was hard to say if the child could survive even if born.

She felt helpless.

She was just a doctor, not a fairy.

Even if her medical skills were exceptional, they were useless without medicine.

Back in her hometown, if they ran out, she could dig some herbs from the mountains, but here, without medicine or hills to scour for herbs, she couldn’t possibly save a life.
