Chapter 1311: Chapter 1308: After the Exam

Some examinees were carried out.

These scenes made Chu Lin somewhat uneasy.

Chu Xing couldn’t help but swallow his saliva, “Anyone who doesn’t know better would think they were going in to be tortured.”

A parent nearby, unable to restrain himself, echoed, “Isn’t it just like being tortured? The imperial examination is so difficult. Do not look at how many scholars enter, the number who pass and become a scholar is very few, and even fewer become first place in the examination.”

Chu Xing sincerely nodded, “Exactly, I just hope Ah Sheng and Ah Zhang can finish their papers without fainting.”

While the two were anxiously waiting,

finally, after about half of the students had come out, Chu Sheng’s figure appeared.

“Ah Sheng, over here.” Chu Xing waved happily.

Chu Sheng heard the voice, saw it was his father and uncle, and hurried over, but, exhausted from the examination, his complexion was somewhat pale.

“How did it go? Are you okay?” Chu Lin supported him.

Chu Sheng gently shook his head, “Dad, I’m fine. My younger brother might take a while longer; his Examination Cell is further back.”

Seeing that his face was pale but still better than those who had fainted or could hardly walk as they came out, Chu Lin didn’t ask him about the examination then; it was over, and there was no need to stress the child.

“We’ll head back to the bookstore straight away. By the way, I’ve bought the place; I’ve canceled our rooms at the inn. You’ll stay in the room behind the bookstore.”

Chu Sheng naturally had no objections, “That’s better, the inn is too expensive.”

“Isn’t that Ah Zhang?”

Chu Xing, with sharp eyes, immediately spotted Chu Zhang walking out of the examination hall and called him over.

Chu Zhang dutifully called out, “Uncle, Uncle Xing.”

“Let’s go home, we can talk later.” Chu Lin saw more and more people gathered, especially since Chu Zhang was emanating a stench, knowing the boy had suffered, he waved his hand decisively without delay.

They squeezed through the crowd and reunited at the bookstore.

The bookstore was not yet open, and it was empty inside.

Chu Sheng and Chu Zhang returned to the bookstore and started heating water for a bath first.

Chu Xing went to a restaurant and brought back meals.

Once the two brothers had finished bathing in turns and saw the table full of food, they were somewhat delighted.

“Eat slowly.” Seeing their somewhat rough manners, Chu Xing found it a bit precious. He poured water for them while asking, “Didn’t you eat well during the examination?”

Chu Zhang’s face turned a bit red, but when asked, he honestly nodded, “Yes, in the Examination Cell we could only eat dry rations, and I didn’t dare to drink too much water, fearing the need for the restroom. The Examination Cell is too small, at night I couldn’t even stretch my legs, I could only sleep leaning.”

“That must have been very uncomfortable, no wonder they say being a scholar is tough.” Hearing this, Chu Xing felt sympathetic; sitting for too long must have made their legs numb.

Chu Zhang had not mentioned that he was unlucky to have a fellow examinee in the adjacent cell suffering from diarrhea, essentially taking his examinations under crumbling conditions.

If it weren’t for the fact that he had memorized the examination papers, he couldn’t even imagine what his results would be.

Even so, he wasn’t confident about the articles he wrote.

“I can see that this trip has worn you both out. You both should rest today; the bookstore will open tomorrow, and you might not rest well then. Go to sleep early today,” Chu Xing said.
