Chapter 523: Chapter 507: Ten Thousand Per Person
For rural folks, one thousand yuan was indeed a large sum of money. Little Sister Wang let out a sigh of relief upon receiving it, no longer needing to rely wholly on her fourth brother.
Wang Lin treated the village Party secretary and the brigade leader to a meal, and then her household registration was moved back to her parents’ home. Since they only moved the household registration without dividing the village’s fields, the villagers didn’t ostracize her, with just a few gossips whispering behind her back.
Seeing her and her children’s household registration under her parents’ names, Little Sister Wang couldn’t stop her tears and was finally comforted after a long talk by Sister Wang.
From the time the Wang family sought justice at the Xiang family to the time Little Sister Wang divorced and her children’s household registrations were moved back to her own family, Wang Xiaowu hadn’t shown up for five consecutive days. Wang Lin didn’t look for him, and neither did Father Wang and Big Brother Wang–it was as if he didn’t exist in the family.
On the sixth day, Wang Lin went to town. He first told Wang’s Eldest Sister’s Husband to come over for dinner that evening, then went to the market to buy groceries. Fortunately, there was someone selling beef and he bought twenty pounds in one go; he also bought pork and fish.
Mother Wang was heartbroken to see him buy so much, saying, “You don’t earn money easily. If you want to eat meat, buying two or three pounds would be enough. Why buy so much?”
Wang Lin replied with a smile, “Mother, I haven’t been home for two years and I want us all to have a meal together. I didn’t have the heart to arrange it before because of Little Sister’s issues. But now that Little Sister is divorced and her household registration is settled, let’s have a reunion dinner tonight.”
Little Sister Wang’s heart skipped a beat. “Third Brother, are you going back to Peng City?”
Wang Lin nodded. “My boss gave me half a month’s leave. It takes seven days just for the journey, so I have to go back tomorrow.”
Little Sister Wang felt reluctant, but she knew work was important and didn’t dare to ask him to stay another two days.
With the five siblings, plus parents and children, there were a total of 27 people, necessitating three tables with eight seats each. And according to Wang Lin’s request, there should be at least eight dishes per table.
Mother Wang and Little Sister Wang couldn’t manage alone, and the best cook in the family was Big Brother Wang’s Wife, so the two sisters-in-law came over in the afternoon to help.
Inside the house, Big Brother Wang asked, “Fourth, is it easy to find work in Peng City? Could you take your eldest nephew and second nephew to work there?”
Wang Lin didn’t agree, saying, “My eldest nephew will only be sixteen next year, and our boss only hires those who are at least eighteen. Big Brother, Second Brother, Shunzi, if they can’t study, they should learn a trade–carpentry, masonry, or blacksmithing will do. Once they’ve got a trade, when they turn eighteen, I’ll find them work in Peng City.”
“Also, as for the girls at home–if they can study, then support them. Whether a son is filial in the future can depend on the wife he marries. Girls are more considerate than boys; if they get educated and make something of themselves, they’ll surely take care of their parents.”
Big Brother Wang, the eldest, was 36 years old this year. He had been married at 18 and had children. His first child was a daughter, so his son was only 15 years old this year. The boy didn’t like studying and had stopped after primary school to work on the farm.
Second Brother Wang, who was more inventive, asked, “Linzi, Shunzi and the others are too young, it’s not suitable. But Big Brother and I should be okay, right?”
Wang Lin didn’t agree, saying, “Big Brother, Second Brother, you don’t have any skills, so you’d end up doing manual labor, and might even end up not getting paid.”
In Peng City, you can only earn money if you have an education. If his older and second brothers went, without someone to take care of them, they wouldn’t even dare to fight back if they were bullied. He could take care of them if he were in Peng City, but the problem was that he wasn’t there!
Big Brother Wang said, “Linzi, you and Second Brother could just work at your factory. With you looking out for us, no one would dare bully us. Linzi, your brothers aren’t afraid of hard or tough work.”
Wang Lin said helplessly, “Big Brother, Second Brother, it’s not that I don’t want to take you with me, it’s just that I… I actually didn’t work in a factory. I just said that so that Dad and Mom wouldn’t worry.”
The two brothers were shocked. Wang Erlin asked anxiously, “Linzi, then what are you doing outside? It’s not something illegal, is it?”
Wang Lin laughed off the concern. “Second Brother, where did your mind wander off to? I’m working as a bodyguard now. The pay is very high, but it’s quite dangerous.”
Second Brother Wang asked curiously, “Who are these people who need a bodyguard?”
Wang Lin briefly explained it was for wealthy individuals: “Some people want to take shortcuts, so they target these rich folks. If they kidnap them, they can demand a hefty ransom, living a life of luxury. However, the chance of success is slim, and even if they get the money, they will be hunted by the police.”
Just then, Sister Wang and Wang’s Eldest Sister’s Husband came over with their six children.
Wang Lin greeted the couple to come inside and sit in the main room, and then called his parents, both sisters-in-law, and Little Sister Wang inside. Little Sister Wang was the last one to come in, and he also asked her to close the door.
