Chapter 610: Chapter 610: The Journey of Two Expressionless Faces
Su Jin and her two companions left the road and stopped when they reached an abandoned shop. The car was also directly put into the Space by Su Jin.
After dealing with the few zombies scattered around, the three of them entered the Space from inside the shop.
Because they were still worried about the safety of Lu Hao and Lian Jiyue, the trio didn’t immediately use the Teleportation Array to return to S city, but instead waited together in the Space with the family that was already there.
It was afternoon outside when Lu Hao finally entered the Space.
“We are taking a temporary rest at an uninhabited service area, don’t worry about us,”
Lu Hao explained to the gathered family members.
“Are the people following us Han Jin and his group?” Su Jin asked.
“Not sure, they haven’t caught up, but it’s very likely them,”
After setting up those obstacles, Lu Hao and Lian Jiyue drove straight ahead. Thankfully, Su Jin didn’t forget to leave enough food and water in the car before leaving, otherwise, the two would have had to worry about food during their journey.
Although Lu Hao could come into the Space to eat and drink, Lian Jiyue could not.
Nevertheless, Lu Hao felt this was probably the most difficult journey he had faced since the Apocalypse began.
Not for any other reason, but because a journey with two stoic faces is not exactly pleasant.
Although Local Tyrant Gold was unfortunately forgotten in the car by Su Jin and the others, it is just a monkey that can’t talk. When Lu Hao looked at it, it also looked back at him with a pitiful expression, wondering why its mistress had forgotten to bring it along?
“…”
Lian Jiyue was even quieter, only taking turns driving with him and coming down to help clear any blocking zombies on the road but…
The atmosphere inside the car was just too cold!
Like now, the two set off again from the service area. Since they could drive on the highway where the conditions were surprisingly good, with no zombies appearing, the car was exceptionally quiet, with both of them silently sitting inside without speaking.
If it were the Lu Hao from before the Apocalypse, he probably wouldn’t feel anything was amiss, but now that he’s accustomed to being with a family, he’s starting to miss the time with Su Jin and the others.
At such times, Xiao Jin would definitely bring out some snacks, chatting and laughing with everyone, occasionally stuffing a bite of food into his mouth, but now…
Lu Hao glanced at Lian Jiyue, who was sitting in the passenger seat.
“You…don’t plan to speak?”
Lu Hao suddenly asked.
Lian Jiyue, who had been gazing out the window, turned his expressionless face towards Lu Hao. A careful look would reveal a trace of shock in his expressionless face.
“…”
Lian Jiyue suddenly didn’t know how to respond.
“Your injury here has actually healed, right? What, still can’t speak?”
Lu Hao pointed to his own head, looking forward as he spoke.
Lian Jiyue withdrew his gaze from Lu Hao: “When did you find out?”
As expected, Lu Hao smiled, it seemed his guess wasn’t wrong.
“The night you returned after looking for a birthday gift for Qiqi,”
Lu Hao answered.
“???”
Why? Lian Jiyue was puzzled, as it didn’t seem like he had done anything noticeable that night.
“Your signature at the city gate’s registry, I checked it later. The ability to write your signature exactly as before, and your own name — I don’t think you are still in a state of amnesia.”
That night, Lu Hao didn’t just go out to notify Liang Jiuhui about the potential Zombie Tide, he also checked the registration records at the city gate. After seeing Lian Jiyue’s handwriting, he began to suspect.
Lian Jiyue’s expression finally showed a trace of emotion, “Then why didn’t you ask me earlier?”
“Because… I wanted to see if you had any ulterior motives. After all, everyone in our team knows each other well, but you’re different,”
Lu Hao spoke frankly, the reason he hadn’t exposed Lian Jiyue’s ruse was also to test him, to see what his intentions were after regaining his memory and staying with the Heart Talk Team.
However, subsequent events proved that this old friend had no other schemes and had even saved the family several times.
Lian Jiyue rarely smiled, saying, “Now I know why you were recruited directly into the criminal investigation department after graduation.”
Even though back then, he was a complete direction idiot…
“It’s in my nature,”
Lu Hao shrugged, taking Lian Jiyue’s comment as a compliment.
Lian Jiyue didn’t keep silent either, “I didn’t speak up because there wasn’t a right opportunity. After all, living under the same roof as you all, I was afraid it would make things awkward.”
“I guessed as much. If you’re not ready, we can continue like before, but it’s still okay to talk,”
Lu Hao still planned to respect Lian Jiyue’s decision. Qiqi had completely accepted Lian Jiyue as a friend now. If he suddenly reverted to the person she didn’t know from before, it would probably be uncomfortable for her again.
Lian Jiyue thought the same; he still didn’t know where his future would lead, but staying with the Heart Talk Team, staying by that little girl’s side, was his only desire for the moment. Would the revelation of his memory recovery frighten her?
Or maybe… wait until the little girl grows up a bit more?
The car returned to its quiet state, the two men of few words having finished their conversation and seemingly not inclined to find other topics. But as the zombies outside became more numerous, Lu Hao focused more on the surroundings.
Not until they had left this stretch of highway did the two realize that the road ahead was nearly blocked by a group of people and zombies.
“They have quite a few people; dealing with those zombies shouldn’t be a problem,”
Lu Hao said.
“About fifty people, and over three hundred zombies,”
Lian Jiyue concurred. So neither of them planned to go down and meddle, considering those people might belong to a Special Ability User team out on a mission from a nearby base.
Therefore, Lu Hao steered the car to the far side, planning to circumvent the group. They had already covered nearly a third of the journey and he hoped to arrive at the S City base within three days. So when encountering a small horde of zombies, they always tried to avoid them if possible.
However, the group didn’t seem to think the same way. Looking closely at the people in the middle, their method of fighting the zombies appeared inexperienced, to the point where several young women were huddled together, trembling with fear, right in the center of the group.
A man covered in blood suddenly rushed toward the armored vehicle crawling slowly forward, pressing his bloodied hands on the hood and yelling loudly, “Please, save us!”
Next, the man, not unexpectedly, was tackled and bitten by a few zombies, splattering blood all over the hood, and even splashing the windshield. As more zombies piled on, the path was completely blocked.
Local Tyrant Gold was no longer sitting behind the windshield; the bloody sight was too disgusting, even for a monkey.
Inside, Lu Hao and Lian Jiyue had no choice but to shut off the engine and step out of the vehicle.
