Chapter 739: Chapter 739: Only his face is worth looking at
Brandon Piers grabbed little Teddy and pulled him into his arms with one hand. “Looks like our Teddy missed his dad.”
“Papa! Papa! Papa!” Teddy, who hadn’t been held by his dad for a long time, looked very excited, his pronunciation all jumbled up.
Even Brandon, who was usually stone-hearted toward his son, melted at Teddy’s calls of “Papa.” He lowered his head and nuzzled his son’s chubby little cheek with his chin.
Teddy was tickled by his dad, laughing uncontrollably, full of joy.
Brandon saw this and proudly raised his eyebrow at Abigail.
Abigail found it childish but didn’t hurrying to take Teddy home.
Old Mr. Smith shot a disdainful look at his grandson, motioned for Abigail to sit down, then ordered Housekeeper Piers to prepare dinner. Only then did he ask Abigail about the afternoon’s events.
Abigail gave a brief account of the situation, deliberately omitting the bad parts.
Old Mr. Smith was particularly pleased with what he heard. “Our Abigail is truly fantastic. Grandpa is so proud of you.”
“Thank you, Grandpa.” Abigail, feeling a bit embarrassed by the praise, thanked him.
Old Mr. Smith smiled, then remembered something. “What’s with his face?”
“Oh, probably some disfigurement.” Abigail glanced up at the man carelessly and answered.
Old Mr. Smith became a bit nervous. “Disfigurement? How could that be? His only good feature is his face!”
Brandon, who had been playing with Teddy, remained silent.
What did he mean his face was his only good feature? Was he still his real grandfather?
Abigail suppressed a smile and nodded in agreement.
Brandon felt hurt. Even having his son being affectionate in his arms didn’t cheer him up anymore.
Just then, the sudden ringing of a video call interrupted Brandon’s sadness.
Old Mr. Smith picked up the phone. Seeing the flashing icon of an old friend, he happily clicked to see Old Mr. Smith’s gloomy face on the screen.
Grayson Piers was startled. “Why are you making a video call with such a grim face, old man? What’s your intent?”
“Isn’t it because of your grandson’s wonderful actions? There’s not a single good person in the Piers family. You’re bullying my Abby while I’m not around.” Church Smith said, his face dark with anger as he spoke over the screen.
“Who bullied Abigail? We barely have time to adore our precious Abigail.” Elder Piers replied, but recalling his grandson’s recent misdeeds, answered with a guilty conscience.
Church Smith didn’t miss his old friend’s expression, causing his mustache to twitch with anger. “You’re still pretending, old man. Seriously think I don’t know what’s happening because I’m abroad?”
“Listen to me. It’s all a misunderstanding. A misunderstanding, I tell you. Don’t believe me? Look, they’re all fine.” Grayson, aware that the other party knew what had happened, quickly replied to Church.
Grayson hurriedly pointed the camera toward Abigail.
Abigail, clearly hearing the two elders’ conversation, smiled and greeted her grandfather once the video focused on her.
Church Smith huffed. “You’re still smiling? Do you know how much you’ve been bullied!”
“Grandpa, don’t believe everything you hear. We’re doing just fine.” Abigail didn’t want her grandfather, who had enough on his plate with Clara, to be worried about her too.
“Fine? Really? Don’t lie to me. Where’s that boy?” Church snorted in disbelief and demanded to see Brandon.
Brandon came over, holding Teddy. If only it weren’t for the bandages covering his face, he looked quite obedient.
“Are you disfigured?” Church, spotting the screen, was bewildered at first and then asked in confusion.
Brandon remained silent.
“Grandpa, not really. Just a few scratches, nothing serious.” Brandon quickly corrected.
Church laughed dismissively. “A few scratches and you’re wrapped up like that? Do you have to be so dramatic for a grown man?”
“Abigail bandaged me up out of concern for me.” Brandon boasted, mentioning Abigail with pride.
Church was speechless.
Who asked about that?
Feeling quite displeased, seeing his granddaughter bullied like this, while she still had the mood to bandage him up. How useless!
“Don’t worry, Grandpa. Abigail’s medical skills are excellent. It won’t leave a scar.” Brandon ignored Church’s frustration and continued to show off.
“Enough, move your face away. I want to see my great-grandson. What’s there to see about you!” The old man, having been fed a mouthful of PDA, felt particularly irritated and impatiently urged Brandon away, though he felt more at ease internally.
Brandon, listening, exposed Teddy’s chubby face to the camera. “Teddy, say hello to Grandpa.”
“Grandpa… Grandpa…” Teddy curiously looked at the screen, calling out “Grandpa” repeatedly, his chubby, pale face almost pressed against the screen.
Brandon pulled him back, but the little one leaned forward again, clearly recognizing Old Mr. Smith, staring at the screen with outstretched hands asking for a hug.
Old Mr. Smith felt immense joy and excitement, he couldn’t wait to see his great-grandson.
After a bit of playful banter, Elder Piers handed the phone to Abigail, allowing her to chat with Church Smith for a while.
Abigail, lately either in the lab or on the way to the lab, hadn’t contacted her grandfather much. Not knowing Clara’s situation, she hesitated for a moment before asking, “Grandpa, how is she?”
“Very well, willing to focus on recovery, even planning rehabilitation.” Mentioning his daughter’s recent state, Church’s expression softened considerably.
Abigail felt happy for her grandfather. Then she heard him suddenly say, “We will return home no later than a month. Your mother will stay in the country from now on.”
This made Abigail look at her grandfather with a slight surprise. It was hard to believe that Clara was not only preparing for rehabilitation but also planning to settle permanently after returning home.
After the surprise, Abigail felt a sense of calm. Clara had wandered far since her teens, and now at this age, it was time for her to return to her roots.
“Okay.” Abigail nodded solemnly. Though she never felt a strong liking for Clara, having never experienced motherly love, she still had some longing for her mother.
Church watched his understanding granddaughter, feeling bitter-sweet. He thought for a moment and asked, “Do you want to see her?”
Abigail shook her head. “Later.”
Though she felt having her mother was nice, she didn’t strongly demand it at this age.
Also, through the screen, Abigail didn’t know what to say to Clara.
Church didn’t insist. However, Clara, behind him, despite appearing indifferent, showed a fleeting sense of desolation in her eyes. After Church hung up, she sat there sulking like a child.
Church noticed this after putting his phone away, eyed his daughter, and said, “Feeling sad? Serves you right!”
Clara glared at her father angrily and turned to Daniel. “Go, get him out. I want to rest.”
Daniel approached, slightly embarrassed, “Grandpa, maybe you should step out for a bit?”
Church was speechless.
Why bother raising daughters? They just bring trouble.
But once Church stepped out, Clara sat up sharply. “Did you say Eva Bell is back in Swallow City to trouble Abigail?”
“Yes, likely because she is Minnie’s daughter,” Daniel’s information was far more comprehensive.
“Ha!” Clara thought of her past entanglements with Eva and laughed coldly. “Can we go back early?”
“No need, Sis is heading to M Kingdom for a competition in half a month. We can return after that.”
“Fine.” Clara’s voice was decisive and sharp.
Daniel raised an eyebrow slightly. His mother, after being down for so long, had finally regained her former domineering demeanor.
