When he woke and wanted to get up, Qin Xue was clinging to his waist preventing him from leaving, nesting comfortably in his arms. When she had to leave for a moment, she forbade him from getting up, saying that she intended to continue sleeping after a while. If he dared to disobey and leave the bed, she threatened to be upset with him. So, he obediently lay there without moving. However, she kept coming and going, eventually climbing back into his arms to sleep. This left him in a dilemma… should he continue lying on the bed , or should he get up?

Seeing his wife sound asleep, Chu Molin decided to get up. He could not fall back asleep and thought that being up could allow him to find something useful to do.

Chu Molin gently moved his wife’s arm from his, dressed, and was about to leave when he was startled by a noise behind him.

“Xue’er, what are you doing?” Chu Molin turned to his wife who was rubbing her eyes, sitting in bed.

“I forgot something really important,” Qin Xue mumbled. She had been sleeping soundly before she realized in her dream that she had forgotten something. She had woken up from that and was now unable to recall what it was.

“What did you forget, that it’s robbing you of sleep?” Chu Molin asked his wife, walking to the edge of the bed. He looked at her dazed face and affectionately ruffled her hair.

“Oh, Qing Zhu! I had completely forgotten. I have to leave to find her a place to stay. Otherwise, where will she stay when she gets here?” Qin Xue exclaimed, mildly embarrassed for having forgotten. Fortunately, she remembered now. Otherwise, she would have no idea where to place them when they arrived.

“Isn’t she not here yet?” Chu Molin remarked, feeling somewhat sorry for his wife. She was so flustered that she couldn’t even sleep properly. This seemed like a lot.

“Ah, no time for sleep! I need to find Qing Zhu a place to stay. Also, it’s Lele’s birthday today, and I need to make her a cake. There’s so much to do, and little time. You should get up and help my dad and Xiao Yu hang the couplets. Everything will surely get done faster with your help. Afterwards, we need to pick up my grandparents, my uncle’s family, and prepare for Lele’s birthday and our family’s New Year’s Eve dinner.” Qin Xue moved quickly, getting off the bed and dressing, all while delegating tasks to Chu Molin.

“Alright, I get it. Just take it easy. These tasks won’t eat up much of your time.” Chu Molin looked at her with concern. There were a lot of people at home. Even if each of them did a little, everything would get done. There was no need for her to worry so much.

“You don’t understand. Once you’re done with your tasks, come help me. Everything’s going to be difficult without your help — I don’t have the strength to do it all alone.” Qin Xue thought about whisking the egg whites stiff for the cake: it was a demanding task that required all her energy. But, unfortunately, there was no electric beater, so everything had to be done manually. Thus, a man with strength was definitely needed in the process.

“Alright then. Go freshen up while I go see if there’s anything else that needs my attention.” Chu Molin left the room before his wife.

“Dad, let me do it.” As soon as he stepped out, Chu Molin noticed his father-in-law preparing to hang a couplet by the front door. He went to help immediately.

“Molin, you’re up. Why didn’t you sleep in longer? Did we wake you with our noise?” Qin Lei, seeing his son in law, didn’t contend for the task. He appreciated the young man’s eagerness to help. This family was eventually going to be his to manage; it was good for him to learn these tasks now.

“No, I’m used to getting up early. I never sleep in. Xue’er, on the other hand, is just exhausted and couldn’t sleep peacefully, so I stayed in bed with her,” said Chu Molin. He felt a bit sheepish hearing his father-in-law’s words. Even if he didn’t sleep at all for two days, he would never sleep in late.
