Chapter 47: The Rescue Station
The movements of the zombies were like quiet fireflies, yet were distinct from Lin Chao’s sense of hearing. There were seven zombies that had sped out of each alley and were coming after them in the dark right now.
Lin Chao spared Fan Xiangyu a glimpse and said, “Go handle them.” He was honestly too lazy to lift a finger for a few normal zombies.
“All you know is to order people around,” Fan Xiangyu pouted. Despite her reluctance, she was still in control of seven zombies, utilizing her brainwaves. She spread them out and used them to draw away the zombies which came from other directions.
After some time, the group managed to shake off the zombies and came to the end of the road. Lin Chao opted for a twenty-four hours convenience store as their shelter tonight.
About a dozen bare-boned human corpses left with only a tiny bit of flesh, piled up before the convenience store entrance. They were already decaying, maggots crawling over the remains.
With his high sense of hearing, Lin Chao knew that there were three zombies inside the store. The human corpses outside had probably come to the convenience store in search of food, driven by hunger, but instead were taken as food by the three zombies inside.
Lin Chao put Lin Shiyu down and walked over holding her hand.
Ye Fei panted heavily as she caught up running to them whilst carrying the little girl. When she saw that Lin Chao was about to push the door of the convenience store open, she became terrified out of her mind, calling out in distress, “Don’t do that! There are monsters inside!”
Creek!
The glass door of the convenience store was pushed open.
Ye Fei thought that this was their end.
She had witnessed the monsters’ speed. It was incomparable to mankind. Once targeted, they could hardly escape. What was more shocking was, he was in such a close range…
Roar!
A few bellows came from the back of the door. Three shadows sprang out from the darkness. Putrid and decomposing, their faces were a nightmare under the faint luminescence of the moon.
Ye Fei had expected the situation. Gritting her teeth, she did not choose to run away but to put down the little girl and darted over.
It was an unfolding scene that then befuddled her. The young man, merely past his twenties, had somehow retrieved a fireman’s axe, hurling it towards the first zombie.
He was as swift as lightning. The zombie was beheaded just as it came out from the back of the door, as its face fell first. However, the other two zombies beside it continued their advance.
Lin Chao did not stop here. After hurling the fireman’s axe, he spun with a kick and landed it at one of the zombies’ stomach, sending it into the darkness of the store, while the fireman’s axe in his grip sliced down for a second blow towards another zombie’s head. He had amazing strength, hacking the zombie’s skull into halves as the axe went through its forehead, nose, lips, then chin.
With the fireman’s axe slightly tilted, as it came out from the center of the zombie’s head, the monster’s brain flowed out following the wound.
Lin Chao prodded its body with the axe preventing it from falling on him and dirtying his clothes. He had found the fireman’s axe during his journey, keeping it in the alternate dimension space along with the Golden Hound and the little shrub monster. He could retrieve it anytime to use in battle.
Having been kicked into the store, the zombie stood up once again to attack. Lin Chao swung the axe, slashing through its neck and chopping its head off.
It took less than ten seconds for the three zombies to be killed. Ye Fei who was preparing to save him was dumbfounded by this spectacle.
When Lin Chao and girls entered the store and closed the glass door, the police officer finally broke out of her daze and followed them while holding the little girl. Pushing the door open and catching sight of the three dead zombies, she was still scared, afraid that they would spring up and lunge at them again.
Realizing that there was no electricity when he pressed the switch, Lin Chao took out a torchlight, he collected at a supermarket, from the alternate dimension space and passed it to Lin Shiyu, telling her, “Find a spot to rest, we’re resuming the journey tomorrow.”
Lin Shiyu hummed in agreement and shone the torchlight at the shelves, realizing that there were plenty of snacks as well as tobacco and alcohol. She grabbed two bags of chips and passed one to Fan Xiangyu.
Fan Xiangyu received it naturally and began eating the chips after opening the bag, clicking her tongue to comment, “Hmm, the taste is not bad, but it still can’t top the taste of human flesh…” She felt an icy gaze on her at once.
Clamping her mouth shut, she did not have to look to know that it was Lin Chao’s glare.
When Ye Fei and the little girl entered the store and saw the shelves full of food illuminated by Lin Shiyu’s torchlight, Ye Fei thought she was dreaming. She had been observing this convenience store for days planning to enter, but there were three zombies occupying the store; although she had her pistol, she dared not foolishly shoot, as the sound could easily draw other monsters over. Helpless, she could only consider this place as a prohibited area.
Never would she expect to currently be standing inside the convenience store with a plethora of food right before her eyes!
Swallowing, Ye Fei has had a full meal since the apocalypse and her food portion was gradually decreased every meal. For the last two days, each of her meals consisted of only a single piece of candy!
Ye Fei was not in a hurry to eat despite the full display of food. Instead, she looked at Lin Chao and asked in doubt, “You’re not an ordinary survivor?”
“Any opinion?” Lin Chao replied indifferently as he casually grabbed a bag of snacks and began eating after sitting himself down on a backrest-swivel chair behind the cashier.
Slightly stumped, Ye Fei stared at him and asked, “You mustn’t be a common civilian based on your skills just then. Are you a soldier? No, that’s not right either. You don’t have the stiff valiance of a soldier. Unless you’re a mercenary? Or an assassin?”
Lin Chao took a glance at her and replied, “You’ve thought too much. I’m just a normal person, an ordinary civilian.”
Of course, Ye Fei would not believe him. She had perceived too many suspicions from Lin Chao’s process of killing the three zombies. Firstly, he was agile; his dexterity was not common, his strength, speed, and reflexes all reflected that he was a veteran.
Secondly, it was his expression, he was calm and collected. When he hacked the monsters’ heads, the young man did not show a slight discomfort or even a frown, like the bloody scene was more than normal. She could not achieve such resolve even when she had witnessed cases of road accidents and death.
Then, there were the reactions of his ‘younger sisters’. It was as if they had become accustomed to this, evidence that he had done something like this plenty of times!
Ye Fei was already certain that Lin Chao must be a dangerous person along the lines of an international assassin!
Lin Chao tossed a few bags of snacks to her and the little girl. “Sleep early after you eat. I’ll send both of you to the rescue station tomorrow.”
“Rescue station?” Ye Fei was surprised.
“There should be airborne army erecting rescue teams in the city center at this point in time. You guys will be transported to the capital base in batches when you get there.”
Ye Fei and the little girl were delighted when they heard Lin Chao. The police officer’s eyes were moist when she said, “It’s great, the country hasn’t given up on us yet. I know that there’s hope!”
Lin Chao waved. “Sleep earlier after you eat.”
Ye Fei nodded and quickly tore the snacks open, wolfing down the contents with the little girl.
