Chapter 52: Obsession

Outside of the alley, the group waited. You Qian clung to Lin Shiyu to ask her about the Evolved.

Lin Shiyu did not keep it from him. She had conceived from Lin Chao’s previous actions that he had no intention to hide this information. In addition, Ye Fei had seen the battle earlier. They would not be able to cover this fact up even if they wished to. She gave a brief explanation regarding the evolution nucleus and the theory of Self-Evolveds.

When You Qian heard that he was one of the rare Self-Evolveds, he triumphantly said, “I knew that I’m not ordinary. Heh heh. Even if I’m scratched by these monsters, I won’t be infected. I can finally take a nice shower tonight.”

Ye Fei was in deep silence.

In her mind, the battle scene between Lin Chao and the giant red-scaled snake replayed on loop. Such strength and demeanor that exceeded the human limit, it brought massive mental impact on her.

‘If only I had strength like that…’ Ye Fei clenched her fists.

Lin Chao came to the outside of the alley and instructed Fan Xiangyu. “Take him along and follow me.”

With an “Oh”, Fan Xiangyu went to You Qian and grabbed his elbow before pointing to Ye Fei and asking, “What about her?”

“It’s still not too late for you to go back to the rescue station now. You’ll die if you follow us,” Lin Chao said glancing at the nervous-looking Ye Fei.

Ye Fei paled instantly when she heard Lin Chao. Softly biting her lower lips, she said, “I won’t go back. We’ll all die one day. I want to become an Evolved like you, I want to become strong too!”

Expressionless, Lin Chao replied, “Even if you have the most powerful ability, you’ll still die.”

“Why?” Ye Fei was astounded.

“Obsession!” Lin Chao took a glimpse at her and said calmly, “A person’s fixated thought is that same person’s weakness. Some people become strong based on the dependence of their obsession, similarly due to this obsession, they become doomed one day! How long you can live depends on whether your obsession is appropriate. Perhaps your obsession was worthy of praise in the old days but in the cannibalistic apocalypse, your obsession will only become your achilles heel!”

Ye Fei was stunned.

“Let’s go,” Lin Chao turned back to call Fan Xiangyu and Lin Shiyu.

Having his elbow dragged by Fan Xiangyu, You Qian instinctively wanted to break free but the shocking fact was that the teenage girl’s fair delicate fingers were so staunch that they did not budge no matter how much he struggled.

Fan Xiangyu patted his head. “Be good. Don’t move.”

You Qian cried anxiously like a good girl who was kidnapped by a brawny man, “Let me go. Where are you guys taking me? I’m a good citizen. A gentleman uses his words and not his fists. Lady, sister, I’ll call you mommy, let me go…”

“I’m not a gentleman. Also, if you shriek like that once more, I’ll hit you!” Fan Xiangyu snorted and shook her fair little fist in front of him.

Previously not knowing better, You Qian would have scoffed: what was the difference between a massage and a punch with tiny fists like that? However, he knew that she was ‘Hercules’ after experiencing her ‘Mount Five Fingers’. Half his life would probably be gone if she punched him once.

You Qian decisively surrendered and spoke softly, “I’ll listen to you. Let’s talk it out. Being physical is not the way of a lady, isn’t it right?”

Fan Xiangyu snorted and tipped her chin, thinking to her that she was going to be the queen of zombies in the future, what was so good about being a lady…

The few of them sped toward the hospital along the desolate street and met a wandering zombie after a short while. Lin Chao did not choose to attack but pushed You Qian towards it.

“I have to kill it?” You Qian’s eyes bulged as he groaned, “Are you still a person? This monster is so mighty, how can I possibly kill it…”

Lin Chao picked his leg up and launched a kick.

You Qian flew and was coincidentally smelled by the zombie. It advanced in excitement and the both of them collided in a hug.

Touching the zombie’s back, You Qian felt the soft mushy flesh under the clothes that felt like mud. He forced himself to withstand the rotten reek and looked down at the zombie that was only one hundred and sixty centimeters tall; a maggot crawled out from the nostril of the putrescent face and You Qian forced a smile. “He – hello, let’s shake hands…”

Roar!

The zombie snarled and attempted a maul.

You Qian immediately scuffled from its embrace and turned toward Lin Chao trying to hide where he was.

To which, Lin Chao lifted his leg in response.

You Qian sweated and jammed his sprint at once to run to the left where a car laid. He leaped onto the top of the car and looked back at the zombie to see it hitting the car and its sharp fingernails, scratching the car roof vigorously but was unable to climb up.

He sighed in relief and squatted down victoriously. “Climb all you want. Your bro’s waiting for you here. Come up will you, I beg you to please come up…”

Lin Chao waved at Fan Xiangyu and continued his way.

Understanding his intention, Fan Xiangyu controlled the zombie to twist its own head off and went to the car to hook a finger at You Qian.

“Come down.”

Baffled, You Qian watched in disbelief, exclaiming, “How did it commit suicide? Is this your special ability?”

“Come down at once,” Fan Xiangyu ordered impatiently.

Without delaying, You Qian slid down on the car window obediently and was tugged along by Fan Xiangyu once more.

Through the battle just now, Lin Chao learned that You Qian’s physique was about three times more enhanced and was the same as other Self-Evolveds. He was not a Multi-Self-Evolved but because of this, Lin Chao became even more eager to know what his power was. The singular ability that allowed him to survive the stomach of a giant snake was immensely mighty!

Arriving at the hospital, corpses and remains laid everywhere. A mass of zombies roamed the building and some baby zombies crawled on the floor. When they smelt Lin Chao and his company, it was as if the zombies were awakened as they teemed with a predatory glare.

Lin Chao led the way, easily killing the pouncing zombies with the fireman’s axe; his movements were clean and swift, one head chopped per blow, without halting his stride. As zombies fell along the way, a path of darkened blood with a mix of human and zombie carcasses paved under his feet.

Fan Xiangyu and Lin Shiyu struck as well when zombies from both sides attacked. On the left, the zombies that came at Fan Xiangyu stopped when they were three meters away from her and killed themselves bizarrely by twisting their head with their own hands; Fan Xiangyu holding You Qian in a leisurely pace, as if the deaths of these zombies had nothing to do with her.

Lin Shiyu’s weapon was a steel pipe. The moment she swung it, violet electrical sparks fizzed on the pipe to increase the damaging potency, enabling her to kill one zombie per hurl.

You Qian’s eyes widened and jaws dropped down to the extent that he could swallow an egg; up until a drop of blackened zombie blood splattered into his mouth. He came back to his senses and kept frantically spitting.

The group explored several buildings in the hospital and found a proper microscope soon. Lin Chao stored it in his alternate dimension space and extracted some blood from You Qian’s arm to pass it to Lin Shiyu for her to conduct the test in the alternate dimension space.

Passionate about the experiment, Lin Shiyu agreed undoubtedly.

Lin Chao then resumed the journey with Fan Xiangyu and You Qian.
