The Self-Awakening

Lin Chao replied calmly, “It’s good to let them see the world. Saves us some trouble in the future.”

Fan Xiangyu muttered softly, “How heartless. I’ll see if you’ll still say the same if your sister went as well.”

Ye Fei and You Qian followed the little boy as they made several turns into an alley. Rotten remains lay all over the ground here, the intense stench was sickening.

You Qian looked around along the way, wary of zombies that could pop out at any time.

Ye Fei held hands with the little boy. Leading them to a green metal door. The little boy retrieved a key and opened the door, pushing it ajar gently.

Both Ye Fei and You Qian took a whiff of the thick putrid stench and the distinct coppery smell of blood that wafted from inside of the door. Frowning slightly, they did not think much of it and followed the little boy into the house.

The rental was not big, housing a living room of little over ten square meters and a tiny kitchen. The bed was furnished in the living room, facing a television and fridge.

A woman lay in the bed. Hair disheveled and face pale, her eyes shone strangely when she saw Ye Fei and You Qian. She tried to get up feebly, but once she moved she was hit by a violent bout of coughing.

The little boy ran over to the bedside at once and passed her the noodles and water, sobbing, “Mommy, be strong. This is the food given by this big brother and big sister. Have some first.”

The woman looked up at Ye Fei and You Qian, eyes filled teary with emotion. “Thank you, the both of you, so, so much…”

She was about to come down from the bed to thank them with a kowtow but Ye Fei and You Qian went forward immediately seeing that with Ye Fei quickly saying, “No, no. You don’t have to. It’s only an act of convenience. You –”

Swoosh!

A heavy object crashed down on Ye Fei’s head from above before she could finish speaking. Her mind went blank as she fell forward. Her vision blurred and her ears buzzed. She then saw the little boy turn around gripping a pair of scissors that were stained with browned blood.

The sickly woman on the bed sat up straight as well. Her ghostly pale face wore a sinister smile of greed.

Feeling that the previous painful strike was about to render her unconscious, Ye Fei shook her head vehemently to maintain a bare sense of consciousness. Her ears restored the ability to hear as she caught the woman wickedly speaking, “Xiao Jie, well done! We can feed ourselves for some time again with these two people.”

“Yes, mommy.” The little boy gave a hard nod and grinned showing his teeth.

It was only then that Ye Fei spotted his pinkish teeth with strands of blood stuck between them. Combined with the childlike smile, it was inexplicably bizarre and maleficent.

Ye Fei felt her body run cold. Barely turning her head, she saw that You Qian had already collapsed on the floor. His head was bleeding with seven to eight bricks scattered beside it.

“Wh – why?” Ye Fei breathed difficulty. She wanted to stand up but the dull ache in her head prevented her body from producing any strength.

“You can ask the king of hell when you see him!” The woman laughed eerily and pulled out the rope under her blanket, tying Ye Fei after pushing her to the floor.

Attempting to resist but the woman’s strength was surprisingly strong, Ye Fei was unable to exert any force in addition to her high fever-like dizziness. She fell victim and was tightly bound by the rope in a blink of eyes.

The woman stood up with a clap and got another rope to tie You Qian up. She sighed in relief upon completion and told the little boy, “Adjust the position to the front some more the next time. We almost missed one just now.”

The little boy nodded again. “I know, mommy.”

The woman stroked his hair and came to the fridge. Pulling the door of the refrigerator open, a light rancid smell permeated. Ye Fei, tilting her head instantly saw what was inside the fridge under the weak light. Her eyes widened in horror and her heart nearly stopped beating.

There were over ten bones with flesh and a few pieces of human skin layered tidily, stored in the fridge. Two skulls were placed on top of the skin but their eyes were already dug, the flesh under the cheekbones was carved off as well, even their noses were cut off. It was horrifying.

There was also a steel basin inside that contained lumps of flesh, including two reddish palms and half a foot.

“You – you guys are cannibals!” Ye Fei was in disbelief.

The woman turned back to her and cracked a grin. “Hush. You’re so fair and supple. I’ll skin you perfectly and deep fry it to savor. It must have a good chew to it. Xiao Jie loves skin the most, don’t you?”

The little boy smiled and gave another hard nod.

Ye Fei felt like she had plunged into an ice cave. Her brain was overwhelmed. It was until she heard the woman say “Drain the blood” that she woke up startled, watching the woman walk toward You Qian holding a kitchen knife tainted with bloodstains.

“Let’s kill this guy first so he doesn’t wake up and struggle unnecessarily.” The woman squatted down and looked at Ye Fei on the side, speaking balefully, “Don’t get impatient. It’ll be your turn soon.”

Ye Fei struggled with all her might, tears spilling from her eyes. She was not fearful of her following fate, she felt that she had put You Qian in harm’s way. This man’s unfortunate demise was because of her!

She suddenly remembered the words Lin Chao said to her three days ago.

‘The obsession is the weakness!

This all happened because of my obsession!

It’s me, I’ve caused you death…’

She looked at You Qian in anguish, regret and remorse filling her entire self.

The woman raised the butchering knife with a disquieting smile and chopping, down aiming for You Qian’s throat.

“No!”

Ye Fei pushed herself up from the floor, screaming as she sent herself barreling towards the woman’s chest. The chop landed on her back and tore her clothes; the burning pain set off her blood, making it cycle faster, changing it…

The woman stabilized herself after two steps back, glaring at her, and said, “Since you’re in such a hurry to die, I’ll fulfill your wish!” She gripped the kitchen knife and hacked it down at Ye Fei’s neck.

Crying hot tears, Ye Fei locked her eyes on the woman without a care for the approaching kitchen knife. She continued ramming her head into the woman’s body with only one thought that growled and bellowed in her heart. ‘I’ll kill you, I’ll kill you…’

Her powerful killing intent had reached a level of hatred that had never emanated her whole life. She almost forgot about the pain on her body or the dizziness of her head. She was in a frenzy to barrel down the woman without a second thought.

Bang!

The woman was flung two to three meters backward and landed harshly on the refrigerator.

Ye Fei’s eyes were red as her tear ducts seemed to have broken down, producing profuse blood. Crimson tears fell from her eyes, her initially delicate face now looked ominous from her strong killing intent and hatred.

‘Kill her! Kill her! Kill her!’

She charged to the woman and bashed her head against the latter in berserk.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The woman wanted to stop her with her hands but the sound of bones breaking reverberated immediately when her palms met Ye Fei’s head, feeling like they were smashed by a hammer. She cried and shrieked as her body was pushed against the fridge, the bones in her chest now fractured as well.

It was like Ye Fei was in a state of hysteria, repeatedly ramming her head over in violence.

“No…” The woman screamed in agony but it was as if Ye Fei could not hear anything. Who knew how long it had been when Ye Fei began to break out of her frenzy. She immediately looked at the pulseless woman in front of her. Her chest collapsed, blood and flesh battered together, as if to have been stampeded by steeled-hooves. The woman’s mouth was agape, dark blood and crushed internal organs poured out from it. She was beyond dead.

Ye Fei panted harshly. The scenes just now replayed in her mind and she sank into silence.

After some time, she turned around and looked directly at the bed where the little boy was stunned in shock and fear.
