Chapter 55: The Grim Reaper, Hei Yue

At the receiving end of Ye Fei’s death glare, the little boy shuddered. The color on his face drained to pale white, biting his bottom lip as he took a step back and fell on the mattress.

Ye Fei’s hair was matted with the woman’s blood and bedraggled like a grudging ghost from hell. She came to the boy holding the bloodied kitchen knife.

The boy trembled with tears cascading. As if unable to withstand such terror, he wailed suddenly.

The crisp voice of a child along with the waterfall of tears seemed to graze a tender spot in the bottom of Ye Fei’s heart; as the burning murderous intent in her eyes cleared at once. She looked down at the weeping boy and was silent for a long time; the kitchen knife ended up slowly sliding down from her grasp, landing on the floor with a ‘clang’.

Suddenly losing strength, she turned back toward You Qian who was still unconscious on the floor.

The moment she turned, however, the little boy stopped weeping and his gaze was brimming with resentment and an overwhelming grudge. He grabbed the knife that fell on the floor, raising it to stab Ye Fei’s back!

Ye Fei’s full attention was on You Qian. When she heard the noise behind her and turned back in alarm, her eyes only saw the radiance of a shiny blade.

Floop!

Blood splattered!

The little boy halted. With the knife still raised high, his eyes wide open, and the child’s twisted with resentment. The powerful sense of loathing pierced deeply into Ye Fei’s heart.

There was a knife that penetrated his temple!

A flying knife!

The door was pushed open softly. Lin Chao and Fan Xiangyu appeared by the entrance. Lin Chao took a glance at Ye Fei and told Fan Xiangyu, “Carry You Qian out and treat his wounds. Don’t let them get worse.”

Fan Xiangyu’s enhanced sense of smell could distinguish the ammoniac odor of urine and reek of feces, despite the overwhelming rotten stench of blood. Covering her nose lightly, she ordered two special zombies in.

Both the special zombies entered the house swiftly and carried You Qian up. Fan Xiangyu placed him on the empty street outside the alley, retrieving a first-aid bandage from his backpack to wrap his head up.

There were only Lin Chao and Ye Fei left in the dim house.

Ye Fei looked at the little boy in stupor.

Walking to the boy, Lin Chao pulled out his flying knife from the child’s skull, blood sprayed from the punctured flesh. He wiped the blood staining his knife on the little boy before restoring his knife into the alternate dimension space.

When he was about to step out, he suddenly caught a glimpse of Ye Fei bending down to grab the butcher knife on the floor.

With a slight frown, Lin Chao was about to say something when the girl suddenly aimed the blade at her own face and drew it down brutally!

Scarlet blood dripped from her smooth fair cheeks flowing along the sharp knife.

Lin Chao asked with his existing frown, “What are you doing?”

Head lowered, the knife in Ye Fei’s hand dropped with a ‘clang’. Her expression could not be seen but she chuckled in a low tone when she heard Lin Chao, softly saying, “I suddenly understand something.”

“What is it?” Lin Chao replied.

Ye Fei kept quiet for a bit with her head still lowered. Then, shaking her head she looked up with a smile. Like the thorn of a rose, there was a sense of beauty in the way blood on her face followed her smile. She spoke softly, “Nothing. I just want myself to remember this lesson. From now on, I want to live with a different name.”

“Is this name very important?” Lin Chao questioned with a slight frown.

Ye Fei nodded seriously before she smiled and answered, “I want to live for myself, for my belief. Since the world is falling into apocalypse and civilization is entering a dark time… My name will be Hei Yue.”

‘Hei Yue?’

Lin Chao was stunned as his eyes widened. He looked at Ye Fei in doubt. “You’re already a Self-Evolved. Do you know what your special ability is?”

“Special ability?” Ye Fei allowed herself to feel her body and nodded after a moment. “I do. It’s Strengthen. The particular effect, I think, is strengthening my physical force.”

‘Indeed…’

Lin Chao was flabbergasted. His gaze at her turned odd as well.

Not many people in the post-apocalyptic era knew the name Hei Yue, but everyone knew the moniker this name symbolized, including zombies, mutated beasts and even monsters of the oceanic region. All of them knew the title of this name! – The Grim Reaper.

Hei Yue, the Grim Reaper!

Like Zeus in the west, Grim Reaper was Hei Yue’s moniker. She was always wearing a big black cloak that covered her whole body, like Shura in the shadows; no one had ever seen what she looked like; they only ever knew that she was a female!

Contrasting the other notable heroes in the early stage of the pandemic, Hei Yue became famous much later, sweeping the world off its feet twenty years after. According to his research, she used to be a second lieutenant of a base city in the Great China region without much fame, receiving only insignificant achievements that were unworthy of mention.

However, her name swept the world like a tornado once she made her debut. Her first fame was killing a Level A king beast in a singular strike outside of a base city.

Although such achievement was lacking compared to figures like Chu Shanhe, no one knew that it was only her inception. In the short three months that followed, she went around the world adventuring into prohibited areas that people were too fearful of. She killed intimidating monsters one after another. One of the three barons in the zombie world, Lord Silver Hand, was also killed by her, new that became a global sensation!

Her entrance onto the battlefield was like a meteor, rising quickly and falling equally as fast; when her reputation was at its peak, she ventured into the oceanic region alone…

She never came back. Many years later, someone found her weapon inside the stomach of a massive oceanic monster. It was only through the data received from the battered intelligence system on that Moon-Hew Blade, that people knew that she had already passed away.

Despite her short-lived presence, her achievements during the period of her appearance could not be accomplished by others in their whole lifetime. She was the only human to have her statue erected in the zombie world!

Lin Chao did not expect that a renowned person like this would actually appear right before him and had even pleaded him to let her join him. If he had not remembered the Grim Reaper’s legendary ability, consequently he would not be able to confirm if it was really Hei Yue; otherwise, he definitely would consider this as a coincidence.

Nonetheless, the divine ability, Strengthen, was only possessed by three people in the world of known ability-bearers, and the strongest one was Hei Yue!

Strengthen was an ability from the Supernatural series, a power that was the crème of the crop. It was nothing like what Ye Fei described, strengthening only her physical self; she had yet to discover the terror this ability possessed!

Who would have imagined that the Grim Reaper, Hei Yu who in history, was fierce and intimidating regardless of species, was actually such a kindhearted girl in the early stage of the disaster?

Lin Chao was dumbstruck for a long time before he suddenly thought of something.

Hei Yue was someone who was supposed to appear only twenty years later but things were now pushed twenty years forward. This meant that her destiny was shifted twenty years in advance due to him.

‘The butterfly effect…’ Lin Chao thought of the Golden Jumbo Crocodile. If he were not there, perhaps the Golden Lion and the jumbo crocodile would not have killed each other; if the Golden Jumbo Crocodile was his doing, how big a butterfly effect would it cause then?

‘Perhaps a matured king beast would have appeared on land in less than ten years…’ Lin Chao breathed in deeply. Regardless, he must hasten the advancement of his capability!

Stepping to the outside, Lin Chao saw that You Qian had already regained consciousness and was chatting with Fan Xiangyu. He waved to call them. “Let’s go, we’re departing to the capital.”
