Chapter 56: Camp Ability – Pt. 1/3
Arriving at the capital, it was distinct to Lin Chao and the group that they encountered fewer zombies along the way. When they were inside of the capital, along the roads there was not one roaming zombie. Burnt military trucks overturned, left with the tread marks of tanks. A mass of camouflage-uniformed soldiers’ and their severed corpses could be seen everywhere!
The remains of fire and smoke left trails on the streets. The surrounding skyscrapers were like stone cold tombs mourning for these brave souls. The big red words painted on the building were the direction to the city center, mankind’s base. This was the last line of the nation’s defense.
The scarlet arrow was like a ray of hope in the hopeless darkness!
Countless survivors in this city found salvation due to these indicators.
Lin Chao and the group moved following the arrows toward the city center. Not long after, they arrived at mankind’s last fortress. The wall was built from a mix of trees and bamboo, reaching six stories tall. Soldiers even patrolled above, the security was tight. Numerous tanks were parked outside of the wall, the domineering military force providing a great sense of security.
From the other direction, a military truck sped its way back teeming with passengers, most of them disheveled and malnourished survivors.
Lin Chao called for Lin Shiyu from the alternate dimension space and the handful of them marched toward the gate of the wall.
A middle-aged soldier who was on duty at the entrance saw them after saluting the military truck that drove in. He waited for the vehicle to enter before walking toward the group.
Scanning the group, the middle-aged soldier was astonished to see that these survivors were unusually clean, unlike the others who were filthy and exuded a variety of odors. In addition, there was a seven or eight years old little girl in the group; she was basically just baggage but which could not be abandoned. It was unbelievable!
His gaze became more tender as he smiled. “Come with me, the few of you.”
Lin Chao was the first to go to him, tailed by Lin Shiyu, Fan Xiangyu, You Qian, and Hei Yue who followed his lead.
Looking upon mankind’s base, Fan Xiangyu was inexplicably nervous. She was obedient all the way, not saying a word, while the ten special zombies she controlled were stored inside Lin Chao’s alternate dimension space.
Soon, the group went inside through the gate following the middle-aged soldier.
Lin Chao instantly saw the mass of workers constructing cement walls, a much tougher defense within the wall of trees and bamboo. The cement wall was already stacked to eight or nine meters in height and achieved a good thickness of ten feet. For the current stage, only a giant like the Golden Jumbo Crocodile could break through it!
Plenty of military trucks parked at the roadside. The one that entered just now was parked at the outermost area, soldiers were guiding down the survivors.
“Follow them to the vaccination clinic. When you guys are confirmed to be free of infection, further arrangements will be made,” the middle-aged soldier that led the group told them, pointing to that group of survivors.
You Qian chortled mindlessly and said, “Don’t worry, we aren’t infected. Look at us, we don’t even have wounds.”
“Rules are rules!” said the middle-aged soldier sternly.
Shrugging, You Qian muttered softly, “So rigid.”
The middle-aged soldier led Lin Chao’s group to the group of survivors that he mentioned and saluted the leading young man, who wore a first lieutenant badge, before explaining the situation. He then returned to the outside of the wall to continue his duty.
The young first lieutenant glanced at Lin Chao and his company before showing the same astonishment as the middle-aged soldier in his eyes, but he did not ask more, giving a low-toned order, “Everyone, follow me to the vaccination clinic. Do not wander off!”
The dozen or more survivors trekked behind him. Among them, Lin Chao and the group stood out like nobles who were placed among beggars.
When they reached a building that had “Virus Testing Center” painted on with paint, two officials suited up in white protective attire at the door went up to them immediately. They spoke to the young first lieutenant before taking the group of survivors into the building.
Fan Xiangyu was nervous. ‘Testing for the virus?’ She was a zombie herself! The concentration of the virus within her could easily infect over millions of people. – She was more like the source of the virus.
Lin Chao eyed her as a sign to relax.
Seeing his gaze, Fan Xiangyu was a little relieved. She took a deep breath to quell her anxiety.
The officers in the building all wore white protective gear and antibacterial masks. One of them arranged the survivors into a line to conduct the test at the counter.
There was only one test, blood testing; ninety-nine percent of the infected could be tested from their blood.
When it was Fan Xiangyu’s turn, she was about to extend her hand when Lin Chao spoke to her from the back almost inaudibly, “Move forward with the group. Ignore everything else.”
Surprised, Fan Xiangyu doubted her hearing but her body obeyed the orders subconsciously. When ignoring the female doctor who was extracting blood, she moved forward with the group. Shocked to find out that the female doctor continued with Lin Chao who was behind her, as if she did not see her.
Fan Xiangyu instantly was struck with a realization. She guessed that ever since they entered the building, Lin Chao had used the refraction of light to deceive doctors’ vision, according to their positions, and thereby preventing them from seeing her, easily avoiding the testing.
Calming down, Fan Xiangyu followed the group in front of her promptly.
Lin Chao and the rest had their blood drawn and joined the survivors in front of them shortly, waiting for the result as they sat in the corridor of the building.
After a few hours, a middle-aged doctor walked over with a camouflage-uniformed soldier. The doctor had a list on his hands, asking after scanning all the survivors, “Who’s Zhang Hua?”
The survivors looked at each other blankly before a meek voice spoke out. “Me. I am.” The one who spoke was an ordinary looking young man.
Casting him a glance, the doctor was expressionless when he said, “You’ve drunk tap water yes? You’re lightly infected. Take him to the quarantine area for treatment.”
“I didn’t!” The young man called Zhang Hua was appalled as he quickly denied.
The soldier beside the doctor stepped forward with a large stride and ordered coldly, “Follow me.”
“No, I don’t want to go there!” Zhang Hua shouted in agitation.
Wearing a pair of white gloves the young soldier looked distant. He pulled from his pocket and caught Zhang Hua’s wrists to lock them with handcuffs. “You’ll be shot immediately if you resist again!”
The corridor was silent in a blink of an eye.
The other survivors were startled as they watched Zhang Hua being brought away glumly.
The middle-aged doctor spoke again, “The rest do not show signs of infection. Go to the entrance. There’ll be people there assigning your accommodation. Come back for testing every ten days after this.”
The survivors breathed in relief and thanked him.
Lin Chao walked out directly with Lin Shiyu, You Qian, and the rest. A military truck drove over and a muscly man hopped off of the driver seat, wearing a second lieutenant badge on his chest. He passed the young first lieutenant a cigarette before pointing to Lin Chao and the survivors behind him, saying, “It’s this group of kids huh.”
The young first lieutenant slapped his shoulder. “Good work. There are a few good ones among them, you can make the arrangements.”
