Chapter 27: Being In the Same Room

“Bring her over to me!” Max ordered Jake coldly when he reached the room at the end of the corridor.

Without asking who he meant, Jake turned around and went downstairs. Of course, he knew that the President wanted to see Shannon.

“Miss Zanders, President Wenley would like to meet you.” Shannon was looking for Pete in the banquet hall, when a waiter approached her and handed her a key card.

In order to not attract any attention, Jake had found a waiter to fulfill Max’s request.

Shannon frowned when she heard that. Why did he want to see her?

“I’m not going.” Shannon immediately rejected him.

Did she have to go just because he wanted to see her?

“Miss Zanders, you’d better go. Otherwise, Mr. Pete might be in trouble tonight.” Shannon had just lifted her foot to walk away, when she heard his threat.

Shannon looked up at the waiter, lifted her skirt and walked upstairs.

She stood at the door with the card, her hands lightly trembling.

She refused to meet him, but Pete was a lawyer, and it wouldn’t be good if he was involved in some kind of scandal.

Shannon hesitated for a moment before opening the door. There was a faint light in the room, and he sat on the sofa, spinning a pen in his hand.

“Where’s Pete?” Shannon walked into the room, her voice trembling uncontrollably.

Max raised his eyes to look at her. His eyebrows were tightly furrowed and there was still some anger in his eyes. Looking at her now, he actually felt a desire to hold her tightly in his arms.

“Fill in as much money as you want, but from now on, you’re not allowed to act intimately with any man.” Max pushed the signed cheque in front of Shannon.

When she saw the cheque, her frown deepened, and her hands trembled uncontrollably. The same scenario had happened that fateful day three years ago. He had also used the same tone to ask her how much money she wanted before they could get a divorce. Now, he was doing the same thing again.

“Why should I listen to you?” Shannon tried her best to hold back the tears that were about to flow out of her eyes, her tone carrying a hint of stubbornness.

Max stood up and walked towards the window. He casually lit a cigarette and turned his back on her.

“Although we’re divorced, you’re still my ex-wife. Being with different men every day is an immoral thing to do, and it harms my reputation as well.” Max’s frosty voice traveled over.

A sneer appeared on Shannon’s beautiful face. Immoral?

“What right do you have to say that? Since we’re already divorced, how is it considered immoral? Did I sleep with those men? Or did you see me sleeping with different men?” Shannon’s chest was burning with anger.

She hated this feeling, hated the feeling of being unable to control her emotions the moment she saw Max.

“Because I’m Max Wenley.” Max suddenly turned around, his tone carrying an unquestionable authority.

Shannon chuckled coldly and approached the table. She picked up the cheque and walked in front of Max, her eyes meeting his.

“So what if you’re Max Wenley? No one knows that I’m your ex-wife. Or is it the case that you can’t get over the fact that the woman you slept with has slept with other men?” Shannon tore the cheque into pieces in front of Max, her tone filled with mockery and ridicule.

When Max heard Shannon’s final remark, the images that appeared in his mind caused the fury in his heart to burn fiercely, and he couldn’t control himself.

He grabbed Shannon’s chin with one hand and pushed her against the wall with the other, anger rising in his eyes.

“Why are you doing this? You should have known that a day like this would arrive from the time we got divorced. I used to listen to you, and that was because I didn’t know anything, but it’s different now.” Shannon’s eyes were filled with a stubbornness he had never seen before.

She was immobilized by him, but at this moment, she seemed to have regained her rationality. Even at such a close distance, she was no longer trembling as badly as before.

“Max, I’m a lawyer. I know my rights. Legally, we no longer have anything to do with each other. No matter how capable you are, you can’t stop me from having a boyfriend unless you kill me right now.” Shannon didn’t struggle, but her tone lacked her usual gentleness.

Max’s grip gradually tightened, and Shannon almost couldn’t breathe.

“Max, don’t do this. You were the one who dumped me. You have no right to order me around.” Shannon grabbed his hand and struggled.

When Max saw tears streaming down her face, he suddenly realized that he had gone overboard. He quickly released her.

Shannon crumpled onto the ground and panted heavily, her tears flowing uncontrollably.

“Where’s Pete?” Shannon finally asked after a long while.

Max turned and headed to the sofa, then lit another cigarette. He looked coldly at her disheveled state.

Then, he walked up to her and held out his hand to help her up.

Shannon was stunned by his action. What was he trying to do?

“Be good. Just take the money and cut off all contact with those men. Do you understand me?” Max’s tone was not as cold as before, but it still didn’t allow for rejection.

A bitter smile appeared on Shannon’s face. For one moment, she actually thought that he still cared about her.

“Pete is not from America. If anything happens to him, you’ll be in trouble.” Shannon pushed him away and walked out.

He was a rational person. Naturally, he wouldn’t really hurt Pete because of her. Even if something happened, she could take care of Pete herself. There was nothing to be afraid of.

She walked to the elevator and pressed the button.

The moment the elevator door opened, Janice, who was wearing a red dress, was stunned. Shannon was actually on this floor. Which meant Max had indeed met Shannon just now.

The two of them looked at each other. Shannon’s gaze was without a trace of panic or nervousness. However, when she saw the bag in Janice’s hand, she suddenly remembered that she left her bag in the room.

“What a coincidence.” Janice spoke first.

Shannon found it funny. Max wasn’t here, yet Janice was still pretending to be so gentle and virtuous.

“Coincidence? Aren’t you here to see if Max is with me? We were indeed together just now, and I left my bag in his room. Let’s go there together.” Shannon turned around and walked towards Max’s room.

Janice stood behind Shannon and looked at her messy hair and clothes, her eyes filled with ruthlessness.

She had to speed up the progress of her relationship with Max. As long as they got married, everything would be fine.

“Max, my bag…” Shannon knocked on the door. Before she could finish speaking, the door opened and Max held her bag in his hand.

Shannon grabbed her bag and walked downstairs, while Janice stood outside the door. The ruthlessness in her eyes had disappeared, and in its place was an aggrieved look.

“Max, I know you must have something to deal with, but it won’t be good for your reputation if you meet her privately in this hotel.” Janice walked into the room and spoke as though she was worried about him..
