Chapter 1980: Visit

It took them two days to complete their visits and conversations.

Qiao Xuan’s demeanor was gentle, devoid of the airs typically associated with an official’s wife. However, perhaps due to her years in such a position and her altered attire from home, she exuded a dignified and reserved aura, commanding respect and dissuading any rudeness.

The second branch of the Shao Family could be treated more casually, merely requiring a gift to be sent without the need for a personal visit. Conversely, the third branch was a closer relation, demanding a formal visit.

Accompanied by Ms. Fang, Qiao Xuan paid her respects to both branches.

Taking care to leave Anan behind, Qiao Xuan relieved her hosts’ concerns upon seeing they hadn’t brought the child along.

The hosts, Ms. Ma and Third Uncle, breathed a sigh of relief at the absence of Anan. Not having to entertain the child was a relief, both in terms of appearances and the need to present a gift in greeting, which they could now conveniently omit under the pretense of forgetfulness.

As the date of Zhao Shu and Taotao’s marriage drew nearer, tensions between the third branch and the first section of the family escalated. However, Shao Liulang’s repeated warnings against causing further trouble with the first section kept them in check. Reluctantly, they extended an invitation to Ms. Fang and Qiao Xuan to join them in their room.

Enduring the humiliation for the sake of their son’s future, the two women accepted the invitation.

Upon seeing Qiao Xuan, Ms. Ma couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy. She remarked, “Niece-in-law, you’re looking quite refined these days. Much improved from before! Seems like without your in-laws to hold you back, you’re living quite comfortably, hahaha!”

Qiao Xuan was left speechless.

Ms. Fang, both irritated and amused, noted that some people never changed their habit of speaking ill of others.

In the past, Ms. Fang might have erupted into a confrontation, but now she chose to remain composed.

Despite Ms. Ma’s remarks, Qiao Xuan remained unruffled. Her heart remained untouched by any ripple.

After all, she no longer saw herself on the same level as Ms. Ma. Her family’s prosperity and smooth sailing made her uninterested in engaging in any competition.

She had no desire to change Ms. Ma’s bad habits.

“There’s no need to worry about that,” Qiao Xuan replied calmly. “Every mother-in-law cares about their daughter-in-law. I’ve been through a lot, so it’s only natural that I’ve changed. Besides, I’ve been managing things with Mr. Qiao and Wulang in Anze Province. I’ve guided them on what to say in their letters! And now that I’ve given birth to a son, of course, I’m not the same as before. I’m feeling much better!”

Qiao Xuan nearly burst into laughter, nodding in exaggerated agreement. “Absolutely, Mom. Ever since Anan was born, I’ve been so happy. Plus, my husband’s career is thriving, and Taotao has found such a good family. My parents and siblings are all in good health. Happiness looks good on me!”

Ms. Fang burst into laughter. “Absolutely!”

Qiao Xuan smiled again. “Honestly, I sometimes wish my mother would control me. She has a lot of wisdom to offer, and I’m grateful for her guidance. So, I don’t feel uncomfortable at all. What Third Aunt-in-law said doesn’t make any sense.”

Ms. Fang nodded approvingly. “I know you’re sensible, not someone who indulges in baseless gossip.”

Ms. Ma, who was spouting nonsense, fell silent.
