Chapter 1995: Anger
Qing Yan let out an even louder snort before falling silent.
How could he possibly clarify the situation? He already regretted his earlier words. Could he openly accuse Bai Ruirui of harboring ulterior motives, of attempting to seduce his Lord?
As the Lord’s personal attendant, his words carried weight. His previous mockery had stemmed from genuine anger. But if he were to repeat such accusations and Bai Ruirui caught wind of it, what chaos would ensue? It would irreparably tarnish her reputation.
Yet, Qing Yan found himself baffled by Bai Ruirui’s persistent pursuit. Could she truly harbor such intentions? Was she out of her mind?
If that were the case, then it seemed she had come prepared. It was a situation beyond his control.
With a decisive turn, Qing Yan distanced himself from Bai Ruirui, opting to ignore her entirely.
Unable to chase after him or demand answers, Bai Ruirui was left with her regret, her sobs intensifying.
She was truly terrified, utterly shaken. She had believed she had calculated the distance accurately, but the reality had proven far more perilous than she had anticipated.
As she watched the hoof barely a foot from her head, poised to descend in the next moment, she was gripped by sheer terror.
She thought she had crossed the line and was doomed!
To her surprise, she emerged unscathed. In that moment, she felt a pang of regret. Why hadn’t she sustained any injuries?
If she had been injured, Lord Shao wouldn’t have been able to depart…
Qing Yan instructed one of the bailiffs to slowly escort the carriage back to the city while he accompanied two others to return Bai Ruirui to the Fan family mansion. He recounted the incident to ensure there would be no misunderstandings. Finally, he sternly reprimanded the Fan family, “The Young Master and Miss should consider assigning more guards when they venture out. If a similar incident were to occur again, luck might not be on their side!”
Following that day, Bai Ruirui appeared before Shao Yunduan on three additional occasions, twice accompanied by Fan Ruyin. Shao Yunduan’s patience reached its limit, and he publicly scolded them both. Bai Ruirui and her mother left in disgrace, much to the amusement of onlookers.
Qiao Xuan’s lips twitched at the account. Her husband seemed to attract the attention of such incompetent women.
“Have you uncovered the reason behind Miss Bai’s behavior?” she inquired.
Caihua and Caiyue shook their heads, indicating they were unaware of any underlying reasons behind Bai Ruirui’s behavior.
However, rumors circulated that the two elder masters of the Fan family were highly displeased with the situation, leading to confrontations with Fan Ruyin. They were adamant about putting an end to the antics of the mother and daughter duo. Nevertheless, it seemed the Old Lady of the Fan family was more concerned about her kin, causing further turmoil.
Shao Yunduan hadn’t mentioned any of this to Qiao Xuan, suggesting he hadn’t unearthed any significant revelations. Qiao Xuan pondered briefly but opted not to inquire further.
To both of them, this appeared to be a trivial matter not worth dwelling on.
Aware of the situation, Qiao Xuan resolved to remain vigilant.
Could it be that the incompetents from the Fan Family sought to emulate the Mei Family’s failed attempt? What if they succeeded? Would that not demonstrate their superiority over the Mei Family?
Unbeknownst to her, Bai Ruirui had narrowly avoided a grave incident when she halted the carriage that day. Subsequently, she faced repeated questioning from Fan Ruyin.
Initially, Bai Ruirui had attempted to deceive her, but Fan Ruyin wasn’t one to be fooled twice.
Bai Ruirui’s attitude toward Qiao Xuan had notably shifted during the previous home banquet, leaving Qiao Xuan unsettled. And now, she narrowly escaped another collision with Prefect Shao’s carriage!
An accident? Fan Ruyin dismissed the notion entirely.
