The sky turned dark at an earlier hour in autumn, so Shen Yan briskly walked back to his housing area. When he reached the 4th floor, he didn’t go home, instead, he knocked on his neighbor’s door.

It was only round 6 o’clock in the evening, so Luo Shuyan shouldn’t be asleep yet.

If it weren’t for the fact she’d gone through a traumatic event today, he would never go the extra mile to get dirty street food for her. This was an exeption.

Luo Shuyan had just finished bathing and was reading before going to bed. Suddenly, she heard a knock on the door. She wore her slippers and went to open it. She saw Shen Yan through the peephole and felt confused. “What’s up?” she asked.

Shen Yan walked into the apartment and went straight to the dining area. He placed the one-time-use box on the table. He spoke in a nonchalant tone, “I happened to bump into the guy who sits behind me in class when I was on the way to the bookshop. He treated me to fried skewers, and since I don’t like these things and I didn’t want to waste food, I brought them back for you.”

“…?”

She walked over and opened the box. The delectable smell of fried food permeated the air, and the usual her would’ve already digged in. However, she didn’t have an appetite today.

“I don’t feel like eating.”

Shen Yan stared at her and said, “Every grain on the dining plate is the fruit of toiling labor. Don’t waste food.”

Luo Shuyan was speechless. “This isn’t rice.”

“Sausages are made from pigs, and the potatoes are planted by the hardworking farmers.”

Essentially, he was trying to imply that any form of food is still food, and they shouldn’t waste any of it. Did the pigs do something to offend her, that she would let their sacrifice go to waste? What about the potatoes?

Due to this, Luo Shuyan was certain that Shen Yan had purposely gone to buy this for her.

Primary school children were poor, so having an extra Yuan or two on hand was a miracle to them. It would’ve cost Shen Yan around CNY4 to buy two skewers and a portion of fries. Though, no one would believe Luo Shuyan if she were to tell others that her schoolmate treated her to such an expensive treat.

At times, Shen Yan was overly smart, and at others, he was also a little dumb.

Since Luo Shuyan figured that he’d bought this for her on purpose, she decided that she wouldn’t let his good effort go to waste.

She nodded, sat down, and dug into the fries.

The fries were crisp and charred, with a layer of chili flakes on top of it.

The sausages were prefectly fried too, and was absolutely delicious.

Luo Shuyan’s anxiousness had been soothened. Nevertheless, Shen Yan didn’t leave. Instead, he sat down opposite her. He seemed to be practicing a script in his mind, and after contemplating for a bit, he unwillingly asked, “You weren’t even scared of zombies, so ther’s no need to be scared about today’s incident.”

Truth to be told, he didn’t know how to comfort her. He knew that movies were merely movies, and it was fake. It was entirely different to see someone jumping off a building in real life.

Yet, he hoped that Luo Shuyan wouldn’t feel as scared as before and that she knew that he and his mother were right next door if she needed them. In the worst case scenario, he would wait for her before and after class. That way, she had no reason to be scared any longer.

Luo Shuyan cocked her head and picked up another fry. “Mn.”

At first, she’d been scared, and she couldn’t swallow anything when she thought about the tragedy that had happened. However, after two to three hours, her emotions were more stable than before.

Shen Yan felt relieved when he saw her reaction.

While Shen Yan watched as Luo Shuyan nibbled on the sausages, suddenly, they heard a knock on the door. The two children stared at each other and nervousness could be seen in their eyes.

If the person were Luo Tianyuan, it wouldn’t be an issue since he spoiled the children. However, if the person on the other side of the door were Shen Qingruo…

Shen Qingruo didn’t allow the children to eat street food. She believed that the reused cooking oil was dirty and there’s dust and sand all over the food; they would fall sick if they were to eat that.

During previous instances, she would require Luo Shuyan to finish the food outside and clean up before entering the house. Today, Luo Shuyan didn’t eat much of Shen Qingruo’s delicious ribs, and was instead munching down on fried skewers from the roadside…

This sight didn’t seem like something she should see!

Shen Yan had further concerns. Based on how sharp his mother was, he knew that she would be able to figure out that he’d gone out to buy the food for Shuyan on purpose; he didn’t want anyone else to know about this, including his own mother.

Shen Yan sprinted to the door and stood on the stool in front of the door to look outside from the peephole. He saw his mother standing outside, so he hurriedly ran back to the dining area and whispered, “Hurry up, hide the food in the cupboards, don’t let my mom notice it. Also, open the windows to allow the place to air out.”

The two children worked well together. One of them went to hide the skewers and open the windows, while the other took out some textbooks and exercise books from Luo Shuyan’s bag. After this, Luo Shuyan went to open the door.

Shen Qingruo was holding a cup of warm milk in hand. She found it oddly suspicious when saw her son sitting on the floor, reading. “Didn’t you say you were going to go downstairs for something?”

Why was he suddenly at Shuyan’s place?

Shen Yan calmly replied, “Luo Shuyan said that she didn’t know how to do one of the questions from class, so I came over to help her.”

Luo Shuyan hurriedly nodded in agreement and continued with the act. “That’s right, Aunty Shen, Shen Yan came over to teach me a question I can’t seem to solve.”

Shen Qingruo didn’t find anything off about the explanation.
