Jared Murphy’s Despair 4
Translator: Kuhaku Chisaac
“I’ve been waiting, Jared Murphy-kun. Congratulations on your engagement. I did not think that you would become the fiancé of Olivier Alway.”
In the staff room, Kirisi Santara, the person in charge of the teachers, greeted Jared with her wild purple hair.
“Thank you.”
“You might be wondering how I got this information. Since this is a Royal Academy with many nobles, the rumors about you two spread pretty fast. Not only that, a lot of the teachers are nobles too. We teachers do not lose to you students in getting information.”
“Please forgive me.”
“Never mind that, I did not think that you would like me anyway. I would’ve married you if you had asked, though.”
“Sorry, but I do not like older people!”
“Oh? But I think that Olivier is the same age as me…”
“I do not want to get involved in magical experiments every day if I were to marry you.”
“That’s awful.”
Kirisi’s smile grew larger. She was a magician, and a teacher, but also a researcher.
Shoulder-length purple hair was common among Dark Attribute Magicians. Kirisi, who wore silver glasses, was beautiful. Unfortunately, due to her lack of sleep, she had dark shadows around her eyes.
As a researcher, Kirisi had been given a laboratory from the school for her individual use. She was a vigilant teacher and had many students take tests to determine if they were studying or not.
Kirisi seemed to be interested in Jared and wanted him to be her lab experiment.
“Dr. Kirisi, I heard that people from the Magician’s Association are coming to meet me. Is that true?”
“Ah, I remember that. Yes, they are coming.”
“You also know about that in addition to my engagement.”
Kirisi pulled her cheeks closer to Jared’s without speaking.
Jared did not know why Kirisi was interested in him. Her thoughts and actions were impossible to predict. She was too loyal to her interests, curiosity, and desire.
“I want to talk to you more, but if I keep a man from the Magician’s Association waiting, I will be scolded by the other teachers. The guy who came to visit you is in the drawing room.”
“Thank you very much. Then, I will excuse myself.”
“Oops, that’s right, Jared Murphy-kun.”
Jared stopped moving and turned around
“About our marriage, I will be waiting for your answer.”
“I will think about it.”
Jared didn’t know if she was serious or not, but he knew that Kirisi was enjoying the conversation. To be honest, he was also having fun.
“See you, Jared”
Jared waved back at Kirisi and walked out.
Outside of the room, Krista had her head lowered and seemed to be Kirisi’s newest subject, putting her in a bad mood.
“What’s wrong?”
“I will not do it! Please Kirisi. Spare me!”
Jared turned his eyes toward Kirisi who was writing notes down with her pen.
Ignoring Krista and Kirisi, Jared headed to the drawing room and knocked on the door.
“This is Jared Murphy, is it okay to enter?”
“Yes, I have been waiting. Please come in.”
“Excuse me.”
After receiving a reply, Jared opened the door and bowed.
“Murphy-kun, I will be going back to the classroom because I’m not supposed to be here. Let’s talk again later.”
Jared closed the door of the drawing-room silently while nodding at Krista.
In the drawing-room, there was a man in a suit standing in front of a two-seater sofa.
The man smiled at Jared.
“I am Dennis Beckman, Association Member of the Magician’s Association. Thank you very much for accepting the matter of being a court magician candidate. So, please sit down.”
“Excuse me.”
Dennis had a gentle smile. He was in his mid-thirties. He had short dark-brown hair and wore a badge that proved his membership to the Magician’s Society on his collar.
“Mr. Jared Murphy’s success and ability combined have been a topic in the Magician’s Association for quite a while. This time, we got a positive reply from Baron Daun and we were able to contact you. If not for Baron Daun’s stalling, we would’ve communicated with you sooner. Do you know about the recommendation rule?”
Jared shook his head and responded.
“I know that we need to be recommended in order to become a candidate for the Magician’s Association, but I do not know the full details.”
“That is fine. There was no such rule to choose a court magician until now.”
“There was no rule?”
“Yes, there was not. Before, one only needed to be a proficient magician to become a court magician. For example, Mr. Murphy’s mother, Liz Murphy, was also a strong magician. Liz Murphy was even given the name, ‘Destruction God’. In Liz’s case, she became a magician because of her achievements.”
“Destruction God?”
I never thought that my mother would have had a nickname like that.
Jared’s mother, Liz Murphy, died when he was young. She died because of poisoning. That was the only thing that Jared knew about his mother. He didn’t even know the criminal or why they killed her.
Jared was not allowed to talk about his mother back at home. Jared tried to get information about his mother from his neighbors, but none of them knew much about Jared’s mother. Even after Jared’s grandparents took him in, his grandparents only had few memories of his mother.
“As a user of Earth Attribute Magic in the battlefield, both enemies and allies were crushed to the ground. She was capable of utilizing the ground in ways similar to a rough-mannered Mountain Goddess. I was able to witness her prowess when I was young, but unfortunately, I fainted from the shock of it.”
With a nostalgic look, Dennis trembled fearfully as he remembered Liz’s destructive abilities.
“Was my mother really that scary?”
There were only gentle memories of Jared’s mother in his mind. It seemed weird to him that his mother had such a different side to her.
“Although Mrs. Liz Murphy is an extreme example, those with the ability to become a court magician were given that position due to their above-average power.”
“Well, it doesn’t seem like the Magician’s Association needs any more manpower, with how strong one individual member can be.”
“What are you talking about?!”
Dennis opened his eyes wide.
“You are still young, at only sixteen years old. Just the other day, a flock of flying dragons came to the kingdom and over 100 people from the Order were dispatched! Before that, I fought against a Maru. That Maru was not a disaster specified grade, but it is not an exaggeration to say that it was capable of causing quasi-disaster level damage! We need more magicians to stop these attacks.”
“You should realize that you have talent and ability that is above average, and they are still developing!”
Jared could only be surprised at Dennis’ compliment.
