Chapter 1192: Meeting Ning Shen Again

Ning Gui went to see Ning Shen.

Through the iron bars of the window, she saw him with a buzz cut, dressed in a blue-gray prison uniform. He looked a bit dispirited, a far cry from the confident man he had been just a few months ago in his tailored suit and polished shoes. He resembled the Overlord of Western Chu, trapped in a world he no longer belonged to.

Ning Shen’s gaze met hers, and for the first time, she noticed a rare gentleness in his expression, accompanied by a hint of surprise. He chuckled softly, a note of self-deprecation in his voice. “Gui, I didn’t expect you to be willing to come and see me.”

He had hoped that once the light cone experiment began, everything would start anew. He imagined returning to the past, preventing his mother’s death, and undoing all the harm he and his second personality had inflicted on her.

She was a rose under the sun, and he didn’t want their next meeting to be marred by the mud of his past.

If he could start over, he would wash his hands clean and strive to be a better person from the beginning.

However, he hadn’t anticipated that the light cone experiment would turn out to be nothing more than a scam orchestrated by the physicists.

While they could find peace in accepting the truth, for people like him who participated in the experiment, the hope of returning to the past was nothing but a dream.

The established facts couldn’t be changed. He had sinned and stained his hands with crime. Even if he managed to cleanse himself, it wouldn’t erase the offenses he committed as part of Utopia. He was already in the abyss, destined to sink deeper into darkness.

Ning Gui felt a pang of discomfort as she met his gaze. “I don’t want those shares and property certificates. They’ve all been handled by Xiao Yize. If they’re yours, they’ll be returned to you; if not, they’ll be confiscated.”

Ning Shen simply gazed at her and replied softly, “Okay. It’s up to you.”

They held each other’s gaze in silence for a long moment.

“Okay.”

Ning Shen watched her back as she walked away, longing to ask, “Will you still come to see me?” But the words caught in his throat. Instead, he said, “Gui, I’m sorry.”

He had treated her so well in the past–how could he have the right to ask her to visit him now?

For the next few decades, he would be condemned to sit facing the wall, alone and growing old in silence.

Ning Gui was already far away, and he received no response. He couldn’t tell if she had heard him at all.

Later, during her fourth year of university, Ning Gui was in the physics laboratory when she overheard a postgraduate senior, mentored by their professor, say, “Someone donated to our research project.”

“I heard that the chairman of the Ning Corporation, who fell from grace last year, may have found his conscience and donated all the legal assets under his name to our university’s Physics Department for research.”

“I also heard that Hua University built a new physics laboratory and acquired many valuable experimental instruments. A lot of them will be beneficial for our project. Perhaps he’s truly repenting and wants to contribute to China’s scientific development.”

“Speaking of which, he didn’t graduate from Hua University’s Physics Department. Why would he donate all his money to our department? Moreover, he used a large portion of it for our current project.”

The seniors in the laboratory were engrossed in discussing the recent news.
