The man urgently checked how much firewood he had left, and became frustrated at what he saw.
“This won’t do.”
Even if he lessened the use of firewood and rationed it to three or four branches, it still wouldn’t last until morning.
He wondered if the beasts could smell his fear because the swarm of wolves and saber-toothed tiger began to approach, encircling him and his campfire.
There was no time to question why a saber-toothed tiger existed in this place. His mind had to focus on how to keep the fire going.
The situation looked grim.
He was afraid that he would die; it didn’t help that the wolves and saber-toothed tiger began growling at each other as if they were fighting for ownership over him.
He questioned what he did that got him into this mess, thoughts rushing into his head, making him unable to think straight.
The man cursed whoever was sending the messages. They could have at least given him a hint so he could have collected more firewood.
Instead, he received two useless skills, how would those help in this situation?
As the wind blew and reduced the fire, his resentment quickly faded, as he had other problems to deal with.
He had to quickly think of a plan. If this continued, the fire would die before morning, and so would he.
The man looked around, but all that was left there were rat carcasses.
“Can I use this?”
The man was worried. The small amount of firewood left would last at most three or four hours…
The problem was after that. Hopefully, these rat monster bodies can help him escape the crisis.
“Haaa…”
The man took a deep breath to clear his mind.
It wouldn’t be right to use the carcasses now; instead, he will wait until the beasts were starving.
Once the beasts were hungry enough, he’d throw the rat carcass as far as he could to lure them away.
If his plans to drive the monsters away were to fail, that would be the end of him.
The man waited anxiously, watching the campfire.
An hour passed, and then another.
In some cases, the animals would get impatient and walked away; however, a wolf and saber-toothed tiger kept their eyes glued to him.
The man waited a little more.
Another hour passed. The campfire was noticeably weaker, and all he had left was a single branch of wood.
The man broke the tree branch and put it in a bonfire.
He wondered if it was because of the blowing wind that the fire consumed more wood than expected?
“Haa…”
The man took a deep breath. He had to remain rational.
He waited for about thirty minutes. The flame was so small that it was surely going to die out soon.
The wolves that walked away earlier returned, seeing that the fire was about to run out soon. They gradually approached, along with the saber-toothed tiger.
It was time to put his plan into action. He took a rat corpse and forcibly threw it between the swarm of wolves and the saber-toothed tiger.
At that moment, the beasts were startled and jumped but didn’t take the bait.
“Damn it…”
The beasts only stared at the dead rat that was awkwardly thrown in between them.
Some time had passed. This time, the man used his knife to stab another rat’s belly and let its blood flow out before throwing it in the middle of the beasts.
This time, they had a better response. Captivated by the scent of blood, the wolves and the saber-toothed tiger moved closer to the corpse.
When two wolves started approaching the rat’s body, the saber-toothed tiger snarled to establish dominance over the meat.
However, the wolf pack did not back down, and they challenged the saber-toothed tiger’s authority.
The wolves continued to approach the rat, and the saber-toothed tiger responded by lowering its body in a pouncing position.
The man quietly observed what was happening and decided to pull the final trigger. Another rat corpse was thrown in between them.
When the rat corpse landed between them, the wolves and saber-toothed tiger pounced and began to attack each other.
Pow!
The saber-toothed tiger hit one of the wolves in the front with its paw. The strike was so powerful that the wolf was thrown to the side, and stayed down.
The other wolves began to bite the sides of the saber-toothed tiger in retaliation.
Kuwaaang!
The saber-toothed tiger exposed its enormous fangs, but this did not stop the wolves from attacking simultaneously.
Kuowook!
The wolf that bit the saber-toothed tiger’s side was thrown into the air and spun like a top.
The tiger was so strong to shake off and throw the wolf into the air, but the bite marks on its sides started bleeding.
Still, it did not stop the saber-toothed tiger from biting one of its attackers on the neck and subduing it.
A simple yet effective attack!
Despite being far away from the action, the man still heard the wolf’s neck break. Then, he saw the saber-toothed tiger dropped the wolf’s lifeless body on the ground.
The saber-toothed tiger did not rest, not even for a second. It continued to fight the remaining wolves.
Every time the tiger hits a target, the man knew that the attack was so powerful because it made an audible sound each time. Some collapsed on impact while some tried to get back up and fight.
One of the wolves died from a neck bite; the first one hit by the saber-toothed tiger’s forefoot was crippled, and the wolf that was thrown up the air lie unconscious.
Now, only one wolf was left standing.
Despite bleeding from the wolf bites, the saber-toothed tiger rushed headfirst towards the remaining wolf. But the wolf was as quick as lightning and dodged the attack.
The saber-toothed tiger struggled to hit the remaining wolf. The wolf counter-attacked by biting its opponent’s neck.
Then, the unconscious wolf suddenly got back up and rushed into battle.
The three beasts continued to battle, eventually the wolf that joined in fell and died, while the other two were left in a standstill.
While they were fighting, the man used the opportunity to go and collect more firewood.
The crippled wolf noticed this and began limping towards him. Its teeth were exposed, showing that it was hostile. When the man saw the approaching beast, he hurried back to his campsite.
“Oh!”
He quickly added more wood into the fire, but it did not catch on immediately, and the flame momentarily disappeared, allowing the wolf to attack.
It was only when the wolf was on top of him that the man he had been attacked.
He felt the wolf’s harsh breath on his face, as the weight of the wolf was slowly crushing him.
“Hey!”
The man did his best to prevent the wolf from biting his neck while hitting the wolf’s back as has he could.
He tried choking the wolf’s neck, but at that moment, his hand slipped, and the wolf got an opportunity to bite him.
“Damn it!”
He managed to push the wolf by its neck, but his face and forearms were filled with scratches.
At the moment, the smell of blood filled the wolf’s senses.
The man opened his eyes and felt the pain from his torn skin. The wolf, now crazed by the smell of blood, returned to attack him.
The bonfire began to spread towards the new firewood, illuminating its surroundings, but neither the man nor the wolf had time to worry about it.
“This damn motherfucker!”
The man pushed the wolf’s neck with his elbow while hitting it with his right hand.
His attack was futile. He was weak in comparison to the wolf that continued to try and bite his neck.
The man realized that if he continued to flail around, he’d grow tired quickly and die.
He stopped swinging his fists and instead tried to reach for the multi-tool in his pocket. He could not find it.
Next, he tried to feel around his surroundings for rocks, or stones, or anything that can be used as a weapon. Again, he found nothing.
At that very moment, the wolf raises its head in preparation for another attack. It rushed in to bite the man.
The man got into a defensive position! He lifted his empty hand to block the attack and felt the wolf’s teeth dig into his forearm.
“Ow!”
The pain was much more intense compared to when the rats bit him.
He began to panic from the immense pain of the wolf’s bite, amplified by the other injuries he already had.
Once the wolf tasted blood, it won’t let its prey escape.
